Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 1st September 2018, W & J Brown Consolation Trophy, 600yards

Saturday’s final shoot for the 2018 season was the W & J Brown Consolation Trophy at 600 yards and if you hadn’t already won a trophy in 2018 it wasn’t the best day to start trying with the windy season that we have had continuing  unabated. The gusty westerly wind thwarted any chance of an easy shoot.

Gordon Shepherd, saving his new barrel till next year, persevered with the old “worn out” barrel and shot a healthy 49.01/50 to set the standard. Steve Williams with no such impediment fired a 48.05 and Graeme Bright found the gusts a little too much scoring just 46.02. The B graders were blown away with the conditions and Darrin Crimston led this group with a 42.0 just ahead of Ron Gibson on 40.01. John Coghill changed his ammunition midway through and encountered a disaster with elevation changes and sticking shells. His 33.01 was the reward.

The three F class competitors were similarly bamboozled with the gusty conditions and were not immune from the appearance of inner fours on their scorecards with just one point separating them at the end of the first stage.

The second stage was a Williams’ benefit with the ex-Australian Representative hitting the centre bull’s-eye no less than five times in a very tight 49.05 to grab the Cock of the Walk from Shepherd who stumbled mid stage with double inner fours and finished on an inner. Bright finished on a double inner after looking a threat whilst Crimston and Gibson learnt nothing from their first stages, advancing by just one centre a piece. Coghill had a revelation with just two “stickers” and a very surprising 46.02 but added another 2 dozen shells to go to the scrap metal man

The F class trio didn’t learn a lot from their first stages either, as Colin Howell and Grahame Willis went about collecting inner fours with the nasty effect showing on their scorecards. Nick Webster on the other hand had a flash of awareness halfway through his stage and finished off with just one dropped point in his last 5 shots to grab the F class COW.

Several long term trophies were finalized and the full list of trophy winners can be found here. The new season will commence on Saturday 20th October with target calibration and practice in preparation for the 2018 Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. Annual Open Prize Meeting
