Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 2nd May 2015 L Williams Cup, 600yards
Light misty rain accompanied by little or no breeze and a dull even light was made to order for the last 600 yard range of the Club Championship. Very trying conditions and a washout earlier in the year meant current scores were well below par and the chance to put a telling score on the board was not wasted. Almost 50% of the competitors bettered their handicaps and those that didn’t, went very close.
Graeme Bright was the standout with the days’ only double possible, a pleasing turn-around after a long form slump. Brights’ 100.05 was light-on for centre bull’s eyes, but sufficient to put Championship contenders Gordon Shepherd and Steve Williams in their place. Shepherd however cut the reigning Champion, Williams, lead to just three points at the half way point of the last round.
B grade saw John Coghill throw away a great opportunity to draw within three points of Dennis Lavelle when the current B-grade champion dropped four points with his last three shots gifting Lavelle a seven point lead.
Errors and misadventure marred F-class Champion Jeff Epplestons’ defence of his crown after a fine first stage 59.3. Mixing rifles and not bringing sufficient matching ammunition proved his downfall with a disastrous 54.1 second stage.
Grahame Willis meanwhile took advantage of Epplestons’ demise and thrust his name back into the F-class Championship challenge after his brother, Geoff Willis, was unable to complete qualification due to family commitments. Aaron Smith and Clint Mills both enjoyed their best scores in a year of limited appearances.
Shepherd won the L Williams Cup from Coghill 298 ¾ to 297 ½.
The penultimate range of the 2015 Club Championship will be held next Saturday 9th May at 700 yards in conjunction with the I. Hughes and J. Porter trophies.
