Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 2nd July 2016 C R Kelly Cup, 900yards

With many shooters away at the District Rifle Associations Champion of Champions, and Country versus City teams match in Sydney, local competition was again drained of much talent and the results of the final round of the C R Kelly Cup were dismal to say the least.

The weather was bitterly cold and the south south-west breeze played a similar role to last weeks’ 800 yard shoot, but the result was that much worse with the extra 100 yards accentuating the errors. The light was quite dark for the entire day and the breeze rose and fell whilst changing angles constantly.

Katoomba visitor Ray Wilson who has only been back target rifle shooting for a short time came to the Bathurst Range again, specifically to try out at the long range. He was the standout shooter, topping the first stage and then sealing the Cock of the Walk with a very tight 49.04 second stage.

Of the local shooters John Coghill’s demise deepened with two disastrous stages littered with outer two’s, magpie three’s, and the very occasional centre bull’s eye. Coghill’s insistence on using his suspect ammunition brought about his down fall, the only redeeming factor was that he didn’t miss the target. Dennis Lavelle and Gordon Shepherd were not immune from wayward shots as they dallied with the magpie ring on numerous occasions, but they held their shots inside the black aiming mark. They both managed to pick up a number of centre bull’s eyes as they drifted back and forth through the bulls eye ring, Lavelle’s eight centres included a number of super bull’s eyes in a strange performance.

Robert Wallace back for a second tryout at F class target shooting was tested by the 900 yards but held his own, landing most of his shots inside the bull and centre bull’s eye ring. His scores of 48.1 and 47.0 were admirable on a difficult day. The Bathurst pair of Aaron Smith and Clint Mills turned out to brush the cobwebs from their rifles but decided one stage was enough on such a cold day.

Lavelle won the C R Kelly Cup by four points over Shepherd.

Next Saturday we will be returning to the 300 yard mound for the commencement of the J Sibera Trophy to be shot over the 300, 500 and 600 yard ranges.
