Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 5th March 2016 W Cutler Cup, 500yards

Gordon Shepherd put in a brilliant performance on Saturday with a near perfect 99.11/100, spoiling his double possible with a 3 o’clock pimple on his last shot of the first stage. He later claimed that he had the best shooting conditions that he has encountered for many years.

Whilst this may be so others found the light breeze and turbulent mirage a lot less than perfect with the directional flags at odds with the mirage and what little breeze there was rapidly puffing up and down, and at times developing into mini willy-willies.

Graeme Bright did well to match Shepherd’s first stage and Steve Williams dropped just two points in another good shoot. Dennis Lavelle clung to the coattails of the A grade group with a steady 47.04 but John Coghill and Ron Gibson gained little mastery over the mirage which played them cruelly.

Grahame Willis wasn’t immune from the mirage even with the aid of his telescope and although he kept a reasonably tight group he wasn’t able to trouble the super centre (X) ring until his final three shots. Alister Kable visiting from Orange tried to keep pace but a couple of inner fours courtesy of the mirage wobbles didn’t help his cause. Chris Lawrance having just his second shoot had a fairly large group and consistently dropped points.

The second stage was a Shepherd bonanza this time securing his possible. A feature of his shoot was the number of consecutive centre bull’s eyes he strung together in each stage. Lavelle again planted himself at the forefront of the A grade group taking second outright but Williams could not sustain his challenge. Gibson tightened his group but Coghill and Bright were all at sea putting in very disappointing performances.

Willis improved his accuracy a little, shooting a 50% super X count but disappointingly dropped three points, only just holding off Kable who improved two points on his first stage. Lawrance didn’t have his first stage accuracy and fell to a 48.0/60.

Next week is the final range of the W Cutler Cup and the third 600 yard range of the Club Championship and QVM competitions. With the Tasmanian State Championships in progress and the Lyndhurst two day open prize meeting scheduled local numbers will be down.
