Bathurst Rifle Club 5th December Diggers & G James Cups

The smaller targets are the common thread running through the poor early rounds of the 2010 season and they are providing shooters with a huge challenge to produce anything approaching a winning score. Weather is also a major factor, although Saturdays southwesterly breeze was much more friendly than in previous weeks.

New names appeared at the top of the winners charts this week with Adam Parkinson and Tim Robinson fighting out handicap honours and Parkinson taking out his first B grade Cock of the Walk after only 5 competition shoots. In A grade Gordon Shepherd produced some form of old to eclipse Club Champion Steve Williams by a mere 2 centre bulls eyes.

The variation in wind direction had a profound effect on all shooters. Varying in intensity, the wind flicked down range at will and squared up equally as quickly. The better of the first stages were by Shepherd with 46.04, and Williams and Ron Gibson both with 46.01. This is a far cry from last years competition shoots and continues the plunge in this seasons scores.

F class shooters Geoff Willis and Andrew Trevillion were no better off, even with rests and scopes, as they continually misread the wind changes and straddled the bulls eye, time and again. Scores did improve slightly as the afternoon wore on and the breeze moderated somewhat and again it was Shepherd and Williams leading the way with 48's. Shepherd took the days COW despite attempting to throw away his advantage with a last shot inner four. Dennis Lavelle produced the biggest turnaround with a 47.06, the days best centre count, whilst John Coghill also improved with a 47.03.

Parkinson and Robinson both shot second stage 46's, the former taking B grade by reason of a three shot first stage advantage. Jan Sibera and Keith Redding had a day both would choose to forget, whilst Gibson wasted his good first stage with an erratic second stage 44.0. Willis and Trevillion did not show any improvement and finished with scores neither would wish to claim. Both shot innumerable inner fours (the F class shooters magpie) to finish with scores in the 40's.

Next weeks 600-yards shoot is the final range of the Diggers and G James Cups
