Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 6 September 2014 W & J Brown Shield, 8/900yards

Again the weather was kind to shooters with a south westerly breeze accompanied by a moderate mirage wafting through the trees on the left of the range. The breeze however varied in strength and the mirage tended to follow in its wake. Whilst the conditions were not severe there was enough variation to add to the difficulty posed by the long 800 and 900 yard ranges.

Geoff Willis, unable to stay for the full afternoon, shot 2 stages at 800 yards and carried on from his recent prize winning performances in regional and interstate competitions with a 60.4 and a 59.4 to set the standard for the day. Willis was however, ineligible for the trophy.

Graeme Bright took up that challenge shooting a low centre bullseye possible but from there, performances trended down with Steve Williams securing a 6 centre bullseye stage but dropping one point for 49.06. Dennis Lavelle and John Coghill shot 47.03 apiece whilst Gordon Shepherd and Ron Gibson were each a point further back.

The F class group failed to take notice of Willis's example dropping points at regular intervals. Grahame Willis was next best with 57.3 whilst Jeff Eppleston could only manage 55.1. Greg Emms had a horrible day just managing to get a centre bullseye six on his last shot, after a string of inner fours and bulls eye fives.

At 900 yards the extra 100 yards proved a challenge too far with the best results being the 48.02's shot by Bright and Coghill, both winning their respective Cocks of the Walk. Williams capitulated with a 47.04 as did Lavelle 45.1 and Gibson 44.0. Shepherd had a rare day off accumulating just 42.01 in a miserable shoot. The F-class efforts were just as poor, Eppleston winning the COW by a point from Grahame Willis 111.3 to 110.5, super Vs being at a premium.

The run of Bathurst Rifle Club members performing well at local and interstate competitions continued last week with Geoff Willis winning F-class at the Dubbo-Narromine prize meeting. Willis went very close to the perfect score twice, dropping just one point in the overall aggregate with a score of 179.20/180 and missing the perfect stage by one super bulls eye when shooting 60.9 at the 500 yard range.

Bright won the B Gurdon Cup and Gibson the A. Pratley Shield. The final competition before the motor race shutdown will be the W & J Brown Consolation next week over 600 yards.
