Bathurst Rifle Club Inc Report 9th February 2015 Fullbore Rifle Shooting

Geoff Willis has started the New Year with a stunning win in the Metropolitan District Rifle Association, Festival of Sydney F standard A division. After a very successful 2014 when he represented NSW in the National F-class Teams Championship in Tasmania, won individual glory at the Tasmanian Championships, and won or placed in several other interstate and intrastate events, Willis took out the 2015 MDRA-FOS in spectacular fashion.

Despite not winning a single range Willis attained just enough points to qualify for the final-three shootout. In the new format the top three shooters at the completion of the two day, 7 range event face off in a 10 shot shootout.

Willis started two points in arrears and seemed in trouble as his competitors had three shots on target before he commenced firing. His first shot was a bullseye, and a dropped point, but from then on he went clear for 59.3 in a burst that saw him finish before his two competitors. That display was just enough for him to snatch the trophy by a single super bulls eye after his opponents dropped two and three points respectively. To add to the excitement team mate and club secretary Jeff Eppleston won the first 500 metre range and took out the day-one aggregate, finally finishing the two day event in 6th position just two points shy of the shootout.

Steve Williams and Nick Cock also shot at the FOS and performed well against some of the best marksmen and women in the State. Both finished just two points adrift of the shootout in the strong target rifle division won by Barbara Schwebel from Holsworthy Rifle Club. Willis followed up that performance with a second placing at the Blue Mountains District Rifle Association, (BMDRA), Open Championship held at Lithgow last weekend.

Local competition restarts next Saturday 14th with shooting commencing at 1.30pm at the 800 yard mound
