Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 9th July 2016 J Sibera Trophy, 300yards

It was an eventful day at the Bathurst Rifle Range on Saturday with maintenance on the communication towers delaying the shoot and causing the last few competitors to battle failing light. Up until then the day was calm, relatively warm and lit up in bright sunshine.

Two novice shooters and two visitors from outside the Bathurst region also attended placing added difficulty on completing the shoot in the available light. To add to the problems a large mob, upwards of 60 kangaroos, undeterred by the gunshots, invaded the range mid shoot, as they made their way from the western paddocks towards the race track.

The shooting itself was generally good with some personal bests achieved. Darren Crimston produced the target rifle stage of the day, a personal best stage score of 49.05, to win the B grade Cock of the Walk. There was a group, all with similar scores, separated only by centre bull’s eyes, which included Dennis Lavelle, Gordon Shepherd and Ron Gibson.

Visitors Luke Harris (Hornsby) and Terry Howell (Gosford) performed brilliantly in the F class discipline with second stage scores of 60.6 and 60.7 respectively. Howell finished with 119.9/120 to win the F class honours. Grahame Willis with 116.7 led in the locals after a hectic stint of coaching and organizing the days’ activities.

Colin Howell and Brendan Robertson both from Bathurst and both of whom have had firearms experience, but not in the field of target shooting, performed very well in their first appearances on the mound. Their scores of 113.4 and 110.2 were very competitive.

Four of Bathurst’s top shooters were absent at the Ungarie long range open prize meeting held over this weekend. In other news Graeme Bright and Ben Wright have had some success in recent weeks, Wright winning two stages at the NRAA National Championships in Brisbane in the F class B grade division before his barrel gave out, and Bright winning and placing in western area competitions. Bright also competed in the MDRA Champion of Champions and teams events in Sydney representing the Blue Mountains DRA and the winning country team in the country versus city match.

Next Saturday will be the 500 yard range of the J Sibera Trophy.
