Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 10th January 2015 R L Gilmour Cup 300yards

            The second of four rounds of the Club Championship commenced under heavy skies with a moderate rear fishtail breeze, the rain holding off until the last of the competitors hit the mound. The 300 yard range, a favorite of the scoped brigade produced the expected domination from the F-class contingent. 

           Jeff Eppleston who always shows his best at 300 yard Club Championship shoots, was again the pacesetter with a Cock of the Walk winning performance which included a 60.2 final stage, the only possible of the day from either discipline. But the biggest surprise of the day was Lawry Sim who has had little competitive shooting in recent months. Sim shot a first stage topping 59.3 and followed that up with a repeat 59.1 second stage to be the only competitor to shoot above his average. The Willis brothers were not really on song and Ben Wright battled along with his hunting rifle against the Rolls Royce style F-class gear of his competitors. 

           As for the target rifle group Steve Williams was the only one to show any semblance of form with a pair of 49's to snare the COW. Williams 98.08 was his first shoot for a number of weeks but he had no difficulty dominating the discipline. Gordon Shepherd and Graeme Bright threw away their chances with 47.01 and 44.02 first stages and although they finished strongly they had to be content with the knowledge that at least they beat the B grade competitors. 

           In B grade Dennis Lavelle continued a worrying trend, shooting a great first stage and then falling in a heap in his second stage. A 48.2 followed by 44.04, similar to last weeks' 50 to 42 crash, fortunately did not prevent him winning B grade as both Ron Gibson and John Coghill were simply not up to the task. 

           The Club Championship continues, and the R L Gilmour Esq. Cup concludes next week at 600 yards.
