Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 10th February 2018, R L Gilmour Esq. Cup, 600yards

International Competition in New Zealand

Bathurst Rifle Clubs’ International representatives have again done the club proud with both individual and teams success in New Zealand. Just prior to the commencement of the New Zealand National Championships (Queens Prize Meeting) in Wellington, Steve Williams entered the Wellington District Rifle Association open prize meeting against very stiff competition from throughout Australasia, the USA, Great Britain, Canada and Japan.

With strong winds (which Wellington is renowned for) and occasional rain periods some matches had to be shortened to 7 shot matches over 300, 600, 800, and 1000 yards. Williams returned to his glory days being the only competitor in the 160 strong field to go through all 6 matches without dropping a point in winning this very prestigious event. Whilst also preparing for the National Championship Geoff Willis took out the FTR division of the “Wellington”.

Willis and Jeff Eppleston as members of the five member Australian FTR team then contested and won the Trans Tasman Trophy held in conjunction with the National Championships.

On another high note Eppleston shooting only the Belt Series, won two ranges, the first 300 yard range and the final 900 yard range to finish second in what is the equivalent of the Queens Prize competition in Australia.  Willis shooting in every competition he could enter, shot consistently to finish 7th in the FTR Grand Aggregate of Masefield (lead up event) and Belt Series combined. The Masefield series was shot over 5 ranges being 300, 500, 600, 900 and 1000 yards whilst the Belt series was shot over three days and 9 ranges from 300 to 1000 yards.

On a less exciting front the local competition proceeded at 600 yards and competitors were confronted with strong wind gusts from the south west. There were no standout performances but the competition was tight with Graeme Bright beating Williams by a solitary centre bulls’ eye with Gordon Shepherd a point further back. Grahame Willis was too good for the other F class competitors.

The R L Gilmour Esq. Cup was a runaway win to Grahame Willis by almost ten points over Coghill.

Next week is a Championship range and the start of the J Wilde Memorial Trophy at 700 yards.
