Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 10th June 2017, F A Wilde Trophy, 500yards

The late autumn, early winter weeks have been generally kind to shooters after a fairly brutal period prior to that. The weather has been calm with just a minimum of breeze and mirage and Saturday was no exception as the gentle east to north easterly breeze filtered through the trees along Barry Gurdon Drive.

There were a number of possibles and near possibles with Nick Cock again dominating the mound. Cock, who last week shot 100.14 at 300 yards, proceeded to destroy the target centre with another 100, this time with 11 centres.

Graeme Bright and Dennis Lavelle just missed double possibles, Bright dropping an early shot for a first stage 49.03 but then fired an excellent 50.06 second stage. Lavelle had a little wobble in each stage but regrouped immediately to shoot a pair of 49’s with 7 centre bull’s eyes.

Gordon Shepherd was not up to his usual accuracy losing points on a regular basis to finish with a disappointing 95.06 whilst John Coghill had a first stage outer two on his last counting shot to put him out of business. A 49.04 second stage was little consolation.

Fclass was again a triumph for Colin Howell as his latest performance holds him on a par with National representative Geoff Willis, on handicap rating at least. Howell shot a 58 with 5 super centres followed by a 59.2 second stage to win the Cock of the Walk for the third time in the last five weeks.

Geoff Willis shared his rifle with his grandson Isaac Bower whilst his brother Grahame attempted to sort out problems with the two club rifles. Bower again showed a lot of promise but an early let off raised a question of his trigger control. Despite that hiccup he scored a great 114.6 in only his second shoot. Willis took to the mound and much to his surprise, and embarrassment, found the culprit when he shot an inner four due to an unexpected let off. The rifle was found to have a hair trigger due to it going out of adjustment. Willis adjusted the trigger and resumed his shoot without dropping another point to finish with 116.7.

The first 600 yard Championship commences as the F A Wilde Memorial Trophy finishes next week at 600 yards
