Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 11th April 2015 Captains Trophy, 900yards

Outside competitions, illness and injury decimated the field for the second last 900 yard range of the Club Championship and with the Victorian Queens Prize (VRA) meeting scheduled for next weekend attendance at the local range will again suffer.

The Club Championship is in turmoil as several of the top contenders have yet to qualify. Their non attendances due to a preference for outside competitions and some low scores due to difficult conditions earlier in the year have left many competitors with a lot of ground to make up with just one shoot at each of the four ranges to complete the Championship.

Gordon Shepherd is the front runner although he missed the chance to improve his already good 900 yard score with just an average shoot on Saturday. Shepherd’s 94.04 was below his level of excellence displayed over recent weeks.

Steve Williams however cut a previous 89.07 score and took seven points out of Shepherd’s lead, with a Cock of the Walk winning 96.07. The strangest scorecard of the day went to Graeme Bright who turned in a 45.06 having started with five-four-two-four, and finishing with a string of 6 centre bullseyes. With five centre bullseyes in his first eight shots in the second stage, Bright again faltered with a magpie three- inner four finish for 47.05, tallying the amazing total of 92.11.

John Coghill produced a wild first stage 43.02 delivering Dennis Lavelle an easy run to the B grade COW. Lavelle failed to take full advantage shooting just 45.01 in reply. Coghill responded with a much improved 47.03 second stage but Lavelle matched that score and won the contest.

The final round of the Club Championship and the first stage of the L Williams Cup commence at 300 yards on Saturday 18th April.
