Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 12th March 2016 W Cutler Cup, 600yards

With several members away at the Tasmanian State Championships (Queens Prize) and the Lyndhurst Annual Open Prize meeting attendance at the local shoot was very sparse. Only four competitors, one a visitor from Orange, fronted the 600 yard mound to contest the final range of the W Cutler Cup.

As with last week the breeze was minimal and wafted in from the right in irregular puffs. The accompanying mirage seemed in concert with the breeze and did not have a great effect on conditions.

Gordon Shepherd had another good centre count shoot but dropped two points on the way to his 48.05. Dennis Lavelle was well on the way to a solid possible until a puff of wind caught him out ruining a great opportunity to put a high championship score in the books. Lavelle’s last two shots were magpie three, inner four for a 47.03. John Coghill again ran out of puff, a five inner finish defining his 44.01. Alister Kable was the only F class competitor but he found the telescope was little advantage as he racked up a 54.3 stage.

Lavelle continues to thrust his way towards A grade status with a 48.01 second stage which won him the days honours a position he has found himself in several times this year against all comers. Shepherd despite his fist stage lead had a mid-stage wobble which saw him drop three points and then fumble the Cock of the Walk with a last shot inner four. Coghill was never in the hunt and finished a disappointing day with a miserable 41.01. Kable looked like grabbing a possible but, as with Lavelle’s first stage, dropped three points in his last two shots to finish with a 57.3. Lavelle won the W Cutler Cup from Shepherd 299 ¾ to 296.

Of the contingent of Bathurst Rifle club members shooting at Lyndhurst Geoff Willis and Ben Wright have each won a range and finished second in the day one aggregate in their respective grades. However at time of writing the first range on day 2 has not been kind to them as they have slipped down the leader board. In Tasmania, Nick Cock although placing second in two early stages in the Queens Prize is a little off the pace for overall honours. Both the Lyndhurst OPM and the Tasmanian State Championship conclude on Sunday 13th.

Hopefully with a full contingent of members Saturday 19th will be the K Redding trophy and the third 700 yard range of the Club Championship
