Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 14th March 2015 W Cutler Cup, 600yards

            With most of the Club members absent at the two day Lyndhurst Annual Open prize meeting the local competition was a real letdown. Only four competitors attended the 600 yard championship shoot and the results were a mite disappointing. The weather was mild and the breeze from the south west appeared to have little devil in its strength and direction. However, looks were deceiving as the scores demonstrated. Seemingly good stages suddenly disintegrated as gusts of wind blew shots into the magpie zone and in some cases almost off the target. 

           John Coghill was in line for a good stage until he fell afoul of a wind change and thus set the stage for all his competitors to follow suit. Coghill's 46.03 was the best of the first stage followed by Gordon Shepherd, 46.02, and Dennis Lavelle, 44.01. Ben Wright was the only F-class competitor and without the support of more experienced shooters coped well scoring 49.0 in the difficult conditions. 

           The second stage was much the same as the first, except that conditions worsened and the result was a scoreboard catastrophe. With the conditions just starting to deteriorate Lavelle held it together to set a reasonable challenge to his opponents. A short break for a change of markers saw Shepherd and Coghill cop the worst of the changes with devastating results. Coghill held a reasonable group until he missed a serious wind change and was almost blown off the target, dropping eight points in five shots. Shepherd likewise added a magpie to his collection of inner fours as both shooters fell short of Lavelle's mark. Wright was also the recipient of a lesson in wind reading as he struggled to hold his group together. 

           Lavelle won the W Cutler Cup from Shepherd by a ½ point margin. Next week is the K Redding Trophy and the third 700 yard Championship range.
