Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 15th August 2015 W & J Brown Shield, 900yards

Bathurst’s travelers are excelling in their respective endeavours both internationally and interstate with Central West shooters achieving both individual and team success in the USA and Queensland. The NSW F-class team which includes Bathurst’s Geoff Willis and Jeff Eppleston won the F-class standard section of the National teams competition in Brisbane and both shooters are joined by Graeme Bright in competing for the QRA Queens prize at the time of going to press.

On the local front the 900 yard mound was the scene of an impressive display which would have done our representative shooters proud. Ron Gibson who has done little shooting this year due to extensive world travels completely dominated the day with a 99.05 when the best of the rest could manage just 93.05 and the rest were somewhat behind that.

Gibson watched the early shooters bumble through dropping points at regular intervals and then made a mockery of their efforts with a big 50.05 possible. Gordon Shepherd dropped three points whilst John Coghill after a good start produced his customary bird to finish off in dismal fashion. Dennis Lavelle was even worse, unable to hit the bulls eye ring until his fifth shot and then not on a regular basis. Ian Cunningham was unfortunately misled with his borrowed rifles’ elevation zero and took an eternity to get on the board.

Gibson was unable to go clear for the day dropping just the one point in his second stage as his group widened but Coghill and Shepherd were not up to the challenge. Lavelle as he so often does pulled at least one good stage for the day with a 48.03 second dig. Cunningham got on the board early and chopped up the paper with a respectable 37.0

Grahame Willis was disappointedly the only F-class shooter on the mound as he produced a good all round performance which would have been hard to beat even by the rest of the F-class group. A first stage 58.1 was followed by a 60.5 possible to easily eclipse his previous best 900 yard score.

Grahame Willis won the W & J Brown Shield with a perfect 300/300 handicap score.

The B Gurdon Cup and A Pratley Shield trophies will commence next week over the split ranges of 300 and 500 yards.
