Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 16th May 2015 Secretary's Trophy, 800yards

Saturdays shoot was conducted in almost perfect weather conditions for both comfort and long range target rifle shooting. With a light almost imperceptible easterly breeze and bright sunshine, which induced a moderate mirage, conditions were set up for high scoring.

Right from the first stages, possibles and near possibles rolled off the mound. Nick Cock started the day with an almost perfect 50.09 and set the tone for the rest of the competition. Steve Williams, Gordon Shepherd and Graeme Bright all dropped a point for 49’s, in Shepherd’s case, his error was a last shot inner four. Williams’ group was quite tight producing 6 centre bullseyes but he faltered on his second last shot.

Dennis Lavelle had a large group and missed the chance of a top score as did John Coghill whose timid windage alterations resulted in a string of inner fours. The F-class duo of Geoff Willis and Grahame Willis both came undone after being fooled by a mirage which altered quite dramatically with intermittent cloud cover.

The second stage was even better than the first for the target rifle group with four possibles resulting from the stage. Cock captured the Cock of the Walk with another 50, this time with 6 centre bulleyes, to post the double possible with a 75% centre bullseye tally. Bright, Williams and Lavelle all shot 50.07 in fine displays of long range target shooting. Lavelle’s improvement was achieved by reducing his front ring size and was perhaps his best ever stage. Coghill did improve but not enough to mount any sort of challenge.

Geoff Willis went one better than his first stage, but a last shot bullseye ruined his possible attempt. His 59.3 however put the pressure on Grahame Willis and he faltered with a double bullseye finish to fall two points short of the COW.

The final round of the Club Championship and the Secretary’s Trophy will be held next Saturday the 23rd May at 900 yards.
