Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 16th July 2016 J Sibera Trophy, 500yards

Saturday saw the return of the prodigals with almost all of the club’s best lining up for a crack at the 500 yard range. The weather welcomed them back by putting on a perfect display of warm, calm and bright conditions. As was to be expected we saw a display of target rifle accuracy we have not seen for many weeks.

Nick Cock and Steve Williams set the scene with double possibles whilst Graeme Bright, after an unsteady first stage, followed with his own 2nd stage possible. Cock nonchalantly slotted a pair of 50.05’s whilst Williams down a little on centre bull’s eyes in his first stage matched Cock’s 50.05 in his second dig Not to be out done Grahame Willis returned to his best with a high score of 118.11, easily topping the F class Cock of the Walk, and putting a sealer on the number one position with a 60.6, 2nd stage possible.

Other scores were less than perfect but most were content with their results. Dennis Lavelle tried a lighter 68 grain projectile with reasonable results but despite topping B grade he was noticeably down on his centre bull count of recent weeks. Darren Crimston, after his career best 49.05 stage last week was a little off in his first stage, but rallied for a 47.02 second stage. Gordon Shepherd was again unhappy with his shoot but Ron Gibson was able to keep in touch with the leading B grade group falling just two points short of a win. Coghill’s ammunition problem boiled down to insufficient powder, a good money saver, but a poor result.

The F class contingent was boosted by three novices who have just taken up the sport. NSW State representatives Geoff Willis and Jeff Eppleston coached Brendan Robinson to a 104.7 and Colin Howell 104.5, whilst Robert Wallace was left mainly to his own devices in shooting 100.3, a good result considering he uses a rifle built for bush shooting rather than a purpose built target rifle.

Neither Eppleston nor Geoff Willis challenged Grahame Willis despite the advantage of seeing whilst coaching, what the conditions were doing. Eppleston did get close to a possible with a 59.5 second stage but Geoff Willis couldn’t do any better than a pair of 57’s.

Next Saturday will be the 600 yard final range of the J Sibera Trophy.
