Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 16 December 2017, Diggers and G James Cups, 500yards
Heat and humidity were the major enemies of shooters as they tackled the 500 yard range on Saturday. A light breeze started in the north-north west moving along the whole 180 degrees of the western boundary from north to south, at times even jumping across the range to come in from the south east.
It was the usual culprits who showed up the rest of the contingent as Geoff Willis laid down a big double possible 120.12 in F class and Nick Cock just missed his double possible with a 99.12 in target rifle. Both performances were exceptional and underlined their national team status.
Graeme Bright and Gordon Shepherd went right to the wire in the race for second place with Bright coming from a point down to pip Shepherd on count back. Shepherd put the pressure on with a 49.06 second stage but Bright responded with a 50.4 possible both shooters finishing with 96.07.
B grade went to Ron Gibson who squandered a 2 point lead with a late magpie in a scrappy second stage but Coghill after a 4 centre bulls eye start fell apart to finish inner, inner, magpie and a one point loss.
Grahame Willis was a clear second 4 points behind brother, Geoff in F class and 5 points ahead of a tight packed bunch which included bench rest shooter Mark Worrad, Jeff Eppleston, Colin Howell and new member Nick Webster.
Worrads’ attendances are few and far between but he seemed to enjoy the open long range discipline with a couple of solid shoots. Eppleston and Howell were not at their best whilst Webster in only his second shoot handled the club .223 scoped rifle well.
The next shoot is the final range of the Diggers and G James Cups, and a Championship range at 600 yards on 23rd December.
