Bathurst Rifle Club Inc., 18th. January 2020, 300yds. Gilmour Cup.

Saturday’s 300 yard shoot was the start of the Gilmour Cup competition over 300, 500 and 600 yards. With two electronic targets in use for the afternoon the good roll up of shooters enjoying the milder temperatures was no problem. The east to south easterly breeze appeared to offer good conditions although there was little mirage evident to help read the changes and some shooters discovered the flags did not show what the conditions were offering at all times with a few unexplained wind shots.

Graeme Bright led the way for the Target Rifle shooters dropping only two points in each stage to be four points down for the day with a two points lead over Steve Williams and Gordon Shepherd with Williams having a two centre bull advantage. Hayden Booth followed next only one point further down after a great second stage score to lead Dennis Lavelle and Ron Gibson by a further five points with Lavelle scoring a three centre bull advantage during his second stage run of inner fours.

In F Class Col Howell was up to his usual high scoring standard at the shorter ranges to top the day’s scores with only three points lost and scoring eleven super centres to finish three points in front of new shooter Aaron Druitt and Geoff Willis with Druitt leading the pair by three super centres. Jeff Eppleston finished one point further down after dropping five points during his second stage while trying out another rifle with Phil Mahon another two points behind although he scored eight super centres with very tight grouping of shots on the target. A good second stage score saw Ben Wright finish one more point less for the day and three points in front of Nick Webster with Steve Pelin next suffering too much lateral dispersion of shots.

Last Wednesday the Australian FTR Rifle Team to compete in South Africa in 2021 was announced with local Bathurst Rifle Club members Jeff Eppleston and Geoff Willis pleased to have been selected for the team, also selected for the team is Lithgow Rifle Club member Brett Bond. After development squad sessions at Canberra, Brisbane and Perth last year the team was selected with members from Nth Queensland, Queensland, New South Wales, ACT and Victoria. With an increasing level of skill in this discipline among Australian shooters it would not have been an easy task in selecting the team which by all accounts should be a great team. Results from the last two World Championships has seen Australia rising to be the current silver medal winners in FTR with the Australian F Open team current gold medal winners having won the last two World Championships. Training sessions will be conducted during the year at four different state rifle ranges.

Next Saturday we will be at 500 yards for the second round of the Gilmour Cup.
