Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 18th April 2015 L Williams Cup, 300yards

With most of the A grade target rifle group away at the Victorian Queens Prize shoot in Bendigo the attention focused on the scoped competitors battling for the coveted F-class Championship Cup. Unfortunately errors, omissions, and forgetfulness put a dent in the chances of the Willis brothers both turning up totally unprepared to contest the championship round.

Grahame Willis brought only 10 reloaded rounds and had to use factory ammunition for his first stage, whilst Geoff shot target rifle “for fun” in his first stage and then switched to his scoped rifle for his second dig.

Grahame showed, too late, what could have been with a 60.3 second stage using the “lonely” 10 reloads. Geoff meanwhile missed a prime opportunity to snatch an unassailable Championship lead over Jeff Eppleston who had a steady 115.7 which included a 59.4 second stage. Ben Wright put it to his more experienced competitors, shooting the best first stage, a 57.2 but was unable to continue in that vein in his second stage. Wright is coming on in leaps and bounds as he becomes accustomed to his newly acquired .308 rifle. The F-class championship is still in the balance with Geoff Willis holding a slight lead.

Target rifle was a bit of an anticlimax with Gordon Shepherd easily accounting for B-graders John Coghill and Dennis Lavelle. Shepherd however, was unable to best either of his previous 300 yard scores thus missing a chance to improve his Championship standing.

Coghill on the other hand cut a very low 80.01, thrusting his name back into the B-grade challenge after several weeks of retched scores. His 91.05 was untidy but enough to best Lavelle whose first stage 42.0 ended his chances .

The second round of the L Williams Cup continues at 500 yards next Saturday.
