Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 21st May 2016 Secretary's Trophy, 900yards

Saturday signalled the last range of the Club Championship and the new Club Champions have been crowned. With Gordon Shepherd unable to attend due to family commitments the door was thrown open for Graeme Bright to snatch the title and snatch it he did in great style. With the mild weather conditions in his favour Bright had however to contend with the hazard reduction burns in the Blue Mountains producing a smoke haze adding to the insipid light later in the day.

Bright fresh off a win at the Cootamundra R C open prize meeting last weekend produced two superb stage possibles to finish the season with a flourish. Bright’s 100.09 would certainly have required Shepherd to shoot up to his best had he been able to compete. The B grade championship was already decided after Dennis Lavelle outshot all of his rivals in the earlier stages of the competition.

In F class Grahame Willis had to endure a tough day battling a painful back complaint just to qualify. While not at his best he did post a score which made him eligible to claim the trophy for the second year in a row.

The days shoot was a mixture of good and bad with the light being the decisive factor. Dennis Lavelle and Ron Gibson both had great difficulty defining the target in the dull hazy conditions. On the other hand John Coghill had his best shoot for many weeks dropping just two points per stage and retaining a fairly tight group. Geoff Willis had a good group and was rewarded with a pair of 58’s with 6 super bulls eyes in F class and Ben Wright unsteady in his first stage tightened right up with a 57.3 to finish.

Bright won the A grade Cock of the Walk, Coghill the B grade and Geoff Willis the F class honour. Next week is the start of the three week F A Wilde trophy commencing at 300 yards.

Bright won the Secretary’s trophy with a perfect 200/200 handicap score on count back from Wright who also attained the maximum.
