Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 21st November 2015 Diggers & G James Cups, 300yards

It has been a very eventful few weeks for the Bathurst Rifle and its members with State Championship and Territory Championship wins to Geoff Willis, a washout and a cancellation in local competition, and finally a completed 300 yard round of the Diggers and G James Cups.

2015 has been an outstanding year for Willis and the last two months has seen him win the NSW State Championship convincingly, taking out the lead up event the McIntosh, the F-class Standard Queens series and the Grand Aggregate. Last week Willis visited Canberra and added the ACT Championship to his list of achievements with a win in the F-class Standard Queens series and the Grand Aggregate.

As icing on the cake our newest shooter Ben Wright journeyed to Canberra for his first foray into a major competition. After a nervous start Wright showed improvement throughout and won the second 800 metre range on day two of the Queens series in the B grade division of F-class Standard.

In local competition the year has, not so much started, but stumbled into existence with the washout of the first 300 yard range and the cancellation of the first 600 yard range of the Diggers and G James Cups. In between mild weather conditions greeted shooters at the 500 yard range earlier in the month.

However with the coming of the first Championship range the early summer conditions conspired to bedevil all shooters in a repeat of the start of the 2015 Championship year. Not one score could be described as a keeper with hardly a stage worth mentioning. Gordon Shepherd with the best single stage of the day a 49.5 took out the A-grade target rifle Cock of the Walk continuing on from his excellent 2015 season.

Dennis Lavelle took out B-grade and Geoff Willis the F-class COW with some very ordinary scores underlining the degree of difficulty posed by the unpredictable breeze and mirage. The predominantly south west breeze turned into a southerly fishtail at times making scoring a lottery. Not one shooter showed any mastery over the conditions on a difficult day.

The second 500 yard range of the Diggers and G James Cups will be held next week.
