Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 22nd November 2014 the Diggers and George James Cups 300yards

The first of the 2014-15 Championship ranges and the beginning of the second round of the Diggers and G James Cups was contested on Saturday over 300 yards.

The conditions were every bit as difficult as those encountered in Canberra by those returning from the ACT Queens Prize competition held last weekend. Local shooters performed well in Canberra without reaching their previous highs as the Willis brothers, Geoff and Grahame, and Jeff Eppleston all won various ranges and/or day aggregates but missed the top prizes.

Saturdays' strong gusting north westerly wind accompanied by oppressive heat made life difficult for all shooters back on the Bathurst range. The Bathurst Rifle Club is pleased to welcome Nick Cock who has transferred from Lithgow RC to get more experience in difficult conditions and long ranges before he joins the Australian Rifle Team for the Palma matches in the USA next year. Cock got his wish with wind gusting in an arc from the north, directly behind the shooters, to a full westerly direction. Apart from a couple of missed sighting shots with a new rear sight purchased for the US competition, Cock hardly missed a beat with the days' best score by far, a 98.10 including a 50.06 second stage possible.

The F-class contingent was lead by Geoff Willis who showed all that he failed to produce in Canberra with a first stage 60.7 possible, in the process shooting the entire centre out of the target, followed by a 59.6 to easily secure the F-class COW. Other notable performances were by Eppleston whose second stage 60.4 was a vast improvement on his first effort of 55.1, and Greg Emms (Lyndhurst) who shot a 59.4 second stage.

Apart from Cock there was little joy for the target rifle group except for Dennis Lavelle who snatched the B grade COW from John Coghill with a second stage 48.03, after the latter dropped four points in his last six shots.

The Diggers and G James Cups continue next week at 500 yards.
