Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 23th April 2016 L Williams Cup, 500yards

With the return of some of the travelers from interstate competitions, numbers were greatly increased at the local shoot on Saturday. The weather was a little cooler and the breeze and mirage were a lot tamer than in recent weeks. This did not correspond to a big boost in scores and the target rifle group were quite disappointing with not one possible attained, although Graeme Bright did go close with a last shot inner four spoiling his second effort.

Bright took out the Cock of the Walk with that final 49.03 after Gordon Shepherd matched him all the way in both stages. Shepherd was not quite able to clinch the win when he dropped a late shot to finish one point in arrears. The B grade contest was not as tight, as Ron Gibson led from start to finish. Gibson shot a 48.02 to keep pace with the A grade competitors in the first stage and finished off with a 47.01 to stay ahead of Dennis Lavelle who was battling a bad case of the flu. Darren Crimston, who dropped in for one of his rare shoots after arriving from the Hunter earlier in the day, shot a pair of 46.01’s. John Coghill was his usual wayward self with an inner four riddled first stage and a wild magpie in his second to top off his day.

F class was a different proposition with the Canada hopefuls Geoff Willis and Jeff Eppleston being joined by current F class Club Champion Grahame Willis and Hornsby Rifle Club visitor Luke Harris. The competition was fierce between the former pair with Grahame Willis and Harris dropping off the pace. Grahame Willis and Harris both improved on their first stages, Harris in particular showing the benefit of practice with some sophisticated wind reading devices over previous months.

Neither Eppleston nor Geoff Willis could make a lot of impact on the super bull’s-eye ring in the second stage and it came down to who could hold the tighter group. Willis looked to have the win in the bag but let Eppleston in, dropping two points, one a last shot bull’s-eye five. Eppleston however was unable to capitalize losing three points to hand the COW to Willis 117.6 to 116.7.

Next week will be the last of the 600 yard Championship ranges for 2016 and the completion of the L Williams Cup, shot over the 3, 5 and 600 yard ranges.
