Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 23 June 2018, F A Wilde Trophy, 600yards

We may have seen the future of the Bathurst Rifle Club on Saturday with the performance of Nick Webster in a stand out shoot. Using the Club .223 scoped rifle while he tries to coordinate his newly purchased rifle with reloaded ammunition, Webster led the F class contingent from start to finish. Unfortunately by dropping a point on his last shot he missed a chance to crown his remarkable effort with a first possible spoon. It was just his tenth shoot after never having had any firearms experience until he joined the Club six months ago.

Although the conditions looked relatively benign the scores did not indicate so. Grahame Willis led the chase after Webster but the best he could do was match Webster’s first stage to finish 3 points short overall, whilst Colin Howell dropped 4 points in each stage to settle for third, 4 points adrift of the winner. Ben Wright coming back from a broken collarbone courtesy of a frisky sheep was a little uncomfortable in his stages of 53.1 and 54.1. Phil Mahon and John Coghill had their own battle as they fought out the final order of the day, both finishing on 99 with Mahon avoiding the wooden spoon by one super centre, 99.3 to 99.2.

With many of the senior shooters away either at the National Queens Prize competition in Brisbane or otherwise travelling the target rifle division was again very sparsely represented with only Gordon Shepherd in A grade and Dennis Lavelle B grade to represent the TR division.

Still patiently waiting the arrival of his new barrel Shepherd had some early wobbles in a first stage 47.02 and followed with a slightly better second stage 48.01 but the new barrel is eagerly sought.

Dennis Lavelle who is due to undergo shoulder surgery this week after cancellation late last week did his best to get a Championship score before recuperation curtails his year, shot a moderate 43.02 first stage but finished strongly with a 46.02 second stage.

Grahame Willis won the F A Wilde Trophy by the significant margin of 8 ¾ points from Gordon Shepherd

Next Saturday the 30th June will see the first of the 700 yard Championship ranges for the 2018-19 season and will commence the C R Kelly Cup over 700, 800, and 900 yards.
