Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 23 August 2014 W & J Brown Shield, 3/500yards

With the 2014 season winding down before the motor race shutdown the dual B Gurdon Cup and A Pratley Shield Trophies, the last of the multi week competitions, commenced over the split ranges of 300 and 500 yards. The weather, with rain forecast, was surprisingly warm and the wind was almost nonexistent. A slight left mirage was all that confronted competitors as they lined up on the 300 yard mound.

The target rifle group seemed to find just enough trouble to put paid to the thoughts of a clear round. Graeme Bright set the standard with a 48.04. His second stage however was shrouded in controversy, as his last shot an inner four, could have been an extra shot due to the scorers missing a centre bulls eye. His 49.06 stood however, giving him a 97.10 and the A grade Cock of the Walk.

B grade saw Darren Crimston pick up his first COW since joining the club in 2013. Crimston who resides outside of Mudgee has only had limited shooting opportunities since relocating from Bathurst, but he showed his wares with a 94.07, highlighted with a 49.04 second stage. Ron Gibson produced a much improved performance with a pair of 47s whilst John Coghill couldn't get enough out of his small calibre .223 to match the other pair. Dennis Lavelle did not have a happy day his first stage 43.01 featuring two magpie three's but his second stage 43.01 was even more disappointing as his group blew out to encompass most of the inner four ring.

F class turned out to be a match between Lyndhurst visitors Greg Emms and Bruce Rowlands and the Bathurst pair of Jeff Eppleston and Geoff Willis. With a combined points score of 233 apiece the winner was determined by just one super bullseye, Lyndhurst winning the day 233.18 to 233.17. The standout shooters were Eppleston, who started with a 60.6 possible, and Emms who rose to the occasion with a 60.6 final stage.

The B Gurdon Cup and A. Pratley Shield will continue next week over 600 and 700 yards.
