Weekly Review 23/10/2022

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc., 22/23rd October 2022, NSWRA Medal.

Saturday saw our return to the range after several weeks’ shutdown, starting with a 100 yard zero check in the morning followed by a 600 yards practise after lunch. Sunday the Bathurst Rifle Club held their NSWRA Medal competition over 500 and 600 yards in the morning, followed by 700 and 900 yards after lunch. The mostly overcast weather with predictions of rain led to some apprehension about a successful day but twelve keen shooters came along and were rewarded with a completed full days program without interruption including some of the best warm weather conditions for shooting that could have been hoped for.

Target Rifle Class was led by John Coghill at 500 yds starting off with a one point lead over Graeme Bright and then Dennis Lavelle finishing another point down. At the break for lunch after 600 yds, Graeme had a three point lead over the others and then after keeping the pressure on at each range during the afternoon that lead increased considerably to leave Graeme the eventual handicap winner of the Target Rifle Medal.

Sporter Class shooter James Clarke was the only shooter on the day to score above their handicap, James is looking for more competition in this new and developing long range shooting discipline aimed more towards off the shelf sporting rifles.

F Class shooters had a much closer competition with Geoff Willis scoring a one point advantage at the first two ranges to lead by two points at the break for lunch with Graham Willis next followed by Jeff Eppleston and Ben Wright one point away. The 700 yds range proved the most difficult with the temperature warming up and mirage possibly causing some problems, Geoff maintained his lead with Ben gaining a point to move into second place ahead of Graham and then Jeff maintaining fourth spot. Total scores could still be turned around at the last range and although Geoff held on to his off rifle lead by four points after losing just one point at the 900 yds range Graham and Jeff did likewise to move them into second and third place off rifle for the day with Ben slipping back to fourth. New shooter Dave Butler arrived just in time after other commitments and started with strong scores, unfortunately a slip in concentration lost points on the last range but I see scores getting better for this keen shooter. The strong finish of Graham Willis placed him just enough ahead with the handicap adjusted scores to claim the F Class Medal for 2022 ahead of Geoff Willis and Ben Wright.

Next Saturday 29th October shooting will be from 500 yards for the second round of the W Cutler Cup.
