Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 24th February 2018, J Wilde Memorial, and K Redding Trophies, 800yards

A fine mild day greeted shooters at the 800 yard mound for the J Wilde Memorial and K Redding 8/900 yard trophy competition on Saturday. On a day one would expect a number of clean score sheets only one possible was shot, that a 50.05 by Steve Williams early in the shoot.

Nick Cock with a high centre count 49.06 and Graeme Bright 49.03 both had mid stage inner fours whilst Gordon Shepherd fell for the two target trick with a shot on the wrong target. The second stage was a very tight affair with Cock uncharacteristically dropping his last shot to add to an earlier inner four giving the running to Williams and Bright. Williams fell to a double inner four and Bright succumbed with a mid stage inner but both a point ahead of Cock. With the two shooters finishing on 98.08 the A grade honours boiled down to a final stage count back between Williams and Bright, the latter taking the day by way of a higher second stage score.

A little bit goes a long way at least that is how two competitors saw the light at the end of the tunnel with their best performances for more than six months. With a light north west to westerly breeze even the thought of 800 yards didn’t seem to faze Ron Gibson and John Coghill as they embarked on a tight tussle for supremacy.

At the end of the day it all boiled down to one solitary super centre to determine the B grade Cock of the Walk. Tied at 45.01 a piece after the first stage both shooters embarked on their quest for a possible, something neither had achieved for several months. It was not to be as a last shot inner four dashed Gibson’s hopes but not his COW ambitions, as Coghill trying valiantly to match Gibson, fell one super centre short after a mid stage inner four.

F class was a different matter with the Willis brothers looking for the days’ prize. It was Grahame Willis who outlasted Geoff, who after almost three weeks of continuous shooting in competitions from New Zealand to Tumut, gave the COW to his brother with an insipid final stage. Changing disciplines from FTR to F Standard didn’t help the situation. Colin Howell had a miserable day his good form over the past several months seemingly deserting him of late.

Geoff Willis by the way won the FTR discipline at Tumut over 900 and 1000 yards.

Next week, the 3rd March, is the final stage of the J Wilde Memorial Trophy and the K Redding 8/900 yard trophy. It is also the third of five 900 yard Championship ranges.
