Weekly Review 24/04/2021

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc., 24th April 2021, J. Sibera Trophy 5/600 Yards.

Last Saturday Bathurst Rifle Club staged a “catch up” match in the morning from 500yds, which was then followed by a 600yd match in the afternoon. Both matches counted towards the Club Championship and the J. Sibera Trophy.

A fine and sunny morning with little or no wind had competitors anticipating record scores at least for the 500yd match. However, Jeff Eppleston, shooting in F Class, proved to be the only one to live up to expectations. He would in fact go on to be the stand out performer on the day.

At 500yds he scored a brilliant double possible score of 60.7 and 60.6 to be a dominant 5 points clear of his nearest rival Graham Willis with 55.3 and then 60.6 to match Jeff in the second stage.

In the target rifle section, it was all about high school student Charlie Bennett. Charlie is new to the sport and after trying F Class for several weeks he decided to do away with the telescope and try target rifle. Still shooting under a coach, Charlie handled the change to peep sights very well, scoring 44.1 and 46.0 for a promising aggregate of 90.1 out of a possible 100. Top score went to Graeme Bright with 50.6 and 47.4

P. Mahon 53.3 – 56.3 109.06

Target Rifle-

R. Gibson 44.1 – 41.1 85.02

After stopping for a venison lunch, provided and expertly cooked by Auskir Berryman, competitors moved to the 600yd mound. Conditions were still very mild, with a light wind and mirage occasionally switching sides to catch the unwary.

As alluded to earlier, Jeff Eppleston again completely outclassed the F Class field, again finishing 5 points clear. His score of 58.4 -59.2 gave him an aggregate for the day of 237.19 from a possible 240. To put this in context, it means that Jeff hit a 12cm diameter circle 37 times from 40 shots. Second at the 600yd mound was Col Howell with 54.2 – 58.4.

Meanwhile in target rifle, Charlie Bennet found the sighting to be more difficult than earlier in the day, but still scored a credible 44.1 – 41.1 to finish off a great day .
