Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 25 March 2017, K Redding 700 Trophy, 700yards.

          Dark foreboding skies greeted shooters on Saturday for the K Redding 700 yard Trophy. Although threatening to bucket down all day, only the odd misty scud fell on shooters backs. The light was fairly even though very dark and the first stage was shot in very calm conditions with little wind and zero mirage. A few gusts started to appear and the wind built up to a strong westerly as the day wore on. There was enough movement and variation to keep all scores in check.

         Nick Cock set the tone with a 48.03 with Graeme Bright (47.05) and Steve Williams (47.02) on his coat tails. John Coghill copped the first magpie three when he missed a quick gust but managed to salvage some credibility with a 46.02. Gordon Shepherd was not in control in his 45.01 whilst Dennis Lavelle peppered the target with a 41.01.

         The second stage was a Cock benefit with a string of 7 centre bull's eyes a feature of his 49.07, but just a small wobble at the end spoiled his game. Williams also put together a string of centre's in his 48.05 as Coghill, Lavelle and Bright scrambled to 46's. Shepherd punctured Coghill's hopes of more bragging rights with a 48.02 to beat him by one point.

         In F-class Geoff Willis led with 58.3 from Ben Wright 57.3, Colin Howell 56.0 and Grahame Willis in the unfamiliar role of rear guard with 55.0. The second stage for the €œeffies€ proved a definite downer and as the wind increased so the scores decreased. Grahame Willis was right off his game and lost a great chance to consolidate his Championship lead. But no one else did any better with Wright retreating 8 points and Geoff Willis 5 points over their first stage scores. Howell put the wind up his more experienced opponents by almost grabbing the Cock of the Walk but could not quite get enough super centres to seal the deal.

         Shayne Barnsley and Kelvin Moss have attended the range over the past few weeks to conduct their black powder practice with varying results. Barnsley's persistence is paying off but wind is a major factor in their chosen discipline because of their large slow projectiles.

         Williams won the K Redding 700 Trophy and Coghill was runner up. With a large contingent of club shooters attending the VRA Queens Prize Shoot in Bendigo next week only a small number are expected to contest the first stage of the Captains Trophy at 800 yards.
