Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 27th February 2016 W Cutler Cup, Championship and QVM, 300yards

Shooters saw the Bathurst Rifle Range from a different perspective on Saturday as a predominantly easterly breeze filtered through the stand of trees on the left of the range and developed into a forward fishtail with a mirage which swapped sides throughout the day.

Although conditions changed there were not the large variations experienced in recent weeks leading to some very good performances across the afternoon. The order of merit was restored with Australian Team member Nick Cock, warming up for the imminent Tasmanian State Championships, the best on the day. A 50.06 first stage possible overwhelmed most of his competitors apart from Steve Williams who scored a 49.03.

For the rest Graeme Bright and the irrepressible Dennis Lavelle notched 47’s whilst Gordon Shepherd chased the breeze with a run of four inner fours to complete his 44.01. Ron Gibson and John Coghill were not in the best of form both jagging outer two’s for their efforts.

The F class contingent did not fare well with neither of siblings Grahame Willis and Geoff Willis able to snatch the ascendancy. Both shot 55’s with few super V’s (X’s) and Ben Wright clung to their coattails with a 52.0. Steve Pelin managed just 46.0, his lack of practice showing as newcomer Chris Lawrance found a coach who seemed at odds with wind changes.

The second stage produced a general improvement in scores with Shepherd taking the lead with a 50.02 possible whilst Bright carded a 49.01. Williams slipped with a 47.04 but even though Cock dropped two points he won the Cock of the Walk by a comfortable 2 point margin. Lavelle had a remarkable shoot scoring 48.07 with most of his shot falling within the tiny 3.2 cm X ring, easily taking out B grade and continuing his attack on A grade status. Gibson and Coghill both showed some improvement but not enough to worry Lavelle.

In F class the Willis brothers dominated the second stage with club Champion Grahame taking out the days honours by a point. Wright matched his best 300 yard total whilst Pelin and Lawrance both showed a better mastery of the conditions.

Next week’s 500 yards will start at 2 pm to allow for other sporting activities on the Mount.
