Bathurst Rifle Club 27th June 2009 The C R Kelly 700 yards

The C R Kelly Cup commenced on a dull, but still day, and most shooters took advantage of the quiet conditions. Steve Williams and Dennis Lavelle continued their barnstorming runs taking out the A and B grade Cocks of the Walk, to draw level on the same number of wins with Graeme Bright and Jan Sibera for the yearly COW trophies. All four shooters are on 11 wins a piece with just a handful of shoots left in the current season.

Lavelle led Williams with a 50.04 to 50.03 first stage and the wandering Gordon Shepherd (returning from a short break), and Graeme Bright followed with 49.04 and 49.03. Ron Gibson was a late starter but held up with 47.03 whilst the trio of Tim Robinson, Keith Redding and John Coghill all shot 46.02’s. Jan Sibera was left wondering after a shock 41.02

F class saw Jeff Eppleston pull out the large screw driver to adjust his sight after an inner four start bur he quickly honed in on an 8 centre bulls eye finish for 57/60. Geoff Willis also shot 57/60.

The second stage saw Williams 50.06, Shepherd 50.06 and Gibson 50.04 all slot satisfying scores but Bright 49.06 (just falling short again) and Lavelle 49.05 could not quite pin down the elusive possible. Coghill 48.01 and Robinson 47.03 improved ever so slightly whilst Sibera shot a 48.05 after tightening his loose front sight, the reason for his first stage disaster. Redding 40.01 didn’t cope with the gloom but Eppleston tuned up for the Champion of Champions shoot with a 59/60. Willis started badly but consolidated with an 8-centre finish for 57/60. Eppleston is the runaway leader in the F class COW with 18 wins to date.

Williams and Eppleston also excelled in the annual Tasmanian Postal Shoot completed earlier in May. Both shooters won badges, Williams a third place and Eppleston a fourth in their respective grades. Shooters enter from all over Australia, the A grade winner being ex Bathurst shooter Peter Thurtell, now at Wingham Rifle Club.

The C R Kelly Cup continues over 800 and 900 yards in the following weeks

The Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. launched its new web site during the week and all club activities can be scanned on www.bathurstrifleclub.org.au
