Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 27th June 2015 C R Kelly Cup, 800yards

With our National and International team members still travelling and likely to be for the next two months local competition is struggling to maintain numbers for the Saturday afternoon shoots. On another near perfect day for target shooting scores were good, but not to the point of perfection, as only one possible, that a 50.01 by Gordon Shepherd, graced the scorecards.

A light westerly breeze, flicking down range at times, was accompanied by a mirage which was generated by the bright sunshine. The breeze and mirage in combination created just sufficient doubt in shooters minds as to hold scoring in check. Centre bulls eyes and super V’s were at a premium in the first stage except for Geoff Willis who, although dropping two points, attained a 50% super V count.

John Coghill had a good start shooting 49.01 and Dennis Lavelle fighting to retain his domination followed up with a 48.03. The second stage saw a big increase in the centre count for most competitors with Lavelle, after stumbling over two inner fours, finishing off with a run of six centre bulls eyes to eclipse Coghill for the B grade Cock of the Walk. Coghills' challenge was shot down by a late magpie three after putting on his best showing for weeks. Shepherd could not finish off the double as he fell afoul of a late inner four in his 49.04.

Eppleston, who has had only sporadic appearances this year, came back to his best with a 59.5, a late bulls eye five robbing him of the maximum points, but sufficient to claim the F-class COW. Willis wobbled mid stage then finished off with a bulls eye five to record just 57.1 a big drop on his recent performances. Ben Wright recorded his first 800 yard score, and but for indifferent starts would have done much better. The last six shots in each stage were up there with his best as he battles with the handicap of inexperience at reading the weather conditions.

Lavelle holds a slender lead over Willis in the C R Kelly Cup, 198 ½ to 197 ½, the formers consistency a major factor in his recent performances.

The C R Kelly Cup concludes next week at 900 yards.
