Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 27th December 2014 N Rutherford Memorial Trophy 800yards

Saturdays' shoot was the culmination of six weeks of the K Harvey trophy in very difficult shooting conditions and the one day N Rutherford Memorial trophy. After last weeks' debacle at 900 yards both the weather and the distance, back to 800 yards, conspired to produce a much more benign shooting environment. Whilst not everyone made the most of the day there were some welcome returns to form.

Ron Gibson was the standout with his first possible for many a long day. Gibson's form has been on the up since he installed a new barrel in his rifle several weeks ago and although he was unable to match his first stage possible, a 46.04 was sufficient to top all comers bar A-grader Graeme Bright. Bright, celebrating his sixtieth birthday and with retirement now a reality, made the most of the day winning the A grade Cock of the Walk. A late inner four in each stage spoiled what would have been a perfect day.

Jeff Eppleston is another who has been down on form but he surged back with a vengeance finishing his days shoot with a 60.4 possible, his best stage over the longer distances for some months. Eppleston beat Geoff Willis who had a miserable first stage 54.1 and despite some improvement was left in the cold. Laurie Sim doesn't shoot on a regular basis but he matched his more experienced opponent in Willis with a satisfying score of 112.4.

Gordon Shepherd was a model of consistency but his pair of 48's were not enough to get him through and Nick Cock started three-four-four before he settled, leaving him little chance of challenging. Dennis Lavelle was also a late starter with three inner fours and a late magpie three leaving him with a mammoth task. Despite a 49.04 second stage he failed to feature and along with John Coghill who cruelled his chances with a magpie three in each stage after what at first looked like being a great shoot, finished down the line.

Lavelle won the K Harvey Trophy from Geoff Willis and Gibson took out the N Rutherford Memorial Trophy from Sim.

The R L Gilmour Esq. Cup will commence next week at 500 yards.
