Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 28th March 2015 Captains Trophy, 800yards

The old saying that every dog has his day proved correct even for the old dogs as a small contingent of rifle shooters contested the first stage of the Captains Trophy over 800 yards on Saturday. With a number of members again on the road contesting Open competitions around the state a bare quorum of shooters attended the Bathurst range.

The weather conditions were reasonably good for a change, although early shooters had to contend with a light swirling breeze which flicked from side to side. Choosing to mark first proved a good choice as John Coghill missed the worst of the fickle breezes and when his time came to shoot the conditions had moderated somewhat.

Steve Williams and Dennis Lavelle could not overcome the changeable breeze and notched up the inevitable magpie or two scoring 46.04 and 45.04 a piece whilst Gordon Shepherd maintained his good form with a 48.03. Coghill on the other hand whilst not having the tightest of groups managed to keep all 10 shots inside the bulls eye ring for his first possible in many weeks.

With so few shooters the second stage rolled quickly into the first and the rapid turnaround did not bring much in the way of a change of fortunes for anyone. Williams and Lavelle again fell afoul of the dreaded magpie but Shepherd showed why he is gaining favoritism for the Club Championship with another high centre count 48.06. Coghill started the second stage very tentatively and then had a mid-stage crisis, pulling an inner four and magpie three, before regrouping for 47.02 and the overall Cock of the Walk.

The third round of the Club Championship and the second stage of the two day Captains Trophy conclude at 900 yards on Saturday 11th April, after the B2B hill climb on Barry Gurdon Drive.
