Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 28th April 2018, L Williams Cup, 300yards

                This week’s 300 yard shoot was conducted on a cool, overcast day that began with a mild westerly broken by the tree line along the left flank of the range and looked promising to be a high scoring day. As is becoming the norm on the Bathurst Range, looks proved to be deceiving with one shooter after the other falling foul to the flickering breeze.

                In target rifle Gordon Shepherd appeared to have it mastered from his first shot in the centre bull ring until dropping 2 points in his last 3 shots to finish with a first stage 48-2. Dennis Lavelle, after several months break due to injury and his first shoot on the clubs new electronic targets, shot a very credible 48-5.

                F Class, again outnumbering the target rifle contingent by more than 2 to 1 had mixed results with some coping with the fluctuating breeze better than others. Ben Wright, another returning from an injury forced break and still nursing a tender shoulder, started his day in good form with a 58-4 leading the rest of the F Class group at the end of the first stage.

                With the breeze picking up slightly and more frequent fluctuation the second stage saw Shepherd drop a further 3 points for a 47-4, while for Lavelle the lack of recent shooting and still carrying injury seemed to take its toll with him dropping 6 points for a 44-3.

                The second stage in F Class saw Ben Wright falter dropping 4 points and leaving the door open for the more experienced national representative Geoff Willis who capitalized with a "stage of the day" 59-1 to claim the F Class "Cock of the Walk" with the rest of the F Class group never in the running for the day.

                The final 500 yard Championship range and the second round of the L Williams Cup will be held next Saturday 5th May.
