Bathurst Rifle Club Inc., 30^th January 2021, Secretary’s Trophy 900 yards.

          Saturday saw a return to the 900 yards line for another round of the club championship and the second round of the Secretary’s Trophy competition following the 800 yards round the previous week. A moderate and mostly north westerly breeze continually changed direction while dropping in strength to make for tough competition at the clubs longest range.

          Graeme Bright continues to excel with consistent shooting taking top spot in Target Rifle class with Steve Williams three points behind although claiming ten centre bulls on the day. Gordon Shepherd followed another two points down and one point in front of Dennis Lavelle with John Coghill next after continuing his good form somewhat in the first stage but dropping out of the leading group in his second stage. Ron Gibson tailed the field appearing to have trouble holding a tight group in his first stage although there was some improvement in his second stage.

          In F Class Jeff Eppleston also scored consistently to keep the lead with Phil Mahon picking up a few more points in his second stage to finish six points behind the lead. Geoff Willis finished another eight points down after losing five points on each of two shots with a lack of concentration, then followed Auskir Berryman who kept good elevation but suffered badly in the quickly changing wind direction during his second stage. At 900 yards during a 15 kph wind a 30 degree change in wind direction can move the point of impact by 220 mm up to 790 mm depending on the change in wind direction to the line of fire, these changes are some of the most difficult to estimate the correction for.

          The Secretary’s Trophy was won by Dennis Lavelle (200) with runner up Phil Mahon (195.42). Next week we move back to 300 yards for the start of the F A Wilde Trophy competition. Another round of the Treasurers Trophy was also held on Saturday with Graeme Bright top scorer over Phil Mahon.
