Graeme Bright showed the application needed to take out the Cock of the Walk, with a safe, but wobbly, first stage 47.02 (two inner finish) followed by a brilliant 49.08, second stage, for an untroubled victory. Little can be said of the rest although Adam Parkinson and Gordon Shepherd were big improvers after less than flattering first stages. Shepherd in particular, had a shocker where he totally lost contact with the bull’s eye to finally finish with an outer 2 in his 39.01. Parkinson was not quite so lost but a magpie three and outer two featured on his 43.04 scorecard. Shepherd, as if shooting at a different venue on another day, confounded everyone with a magic, 50.06 possible from out of the blue. Rarely have we seen more diverse results from two trips to the mound on the same afternoon. Parkinson in line with his recent good form put the first stage behind him and pulled off a come from behind win in the B grade category. Needing to make up 3 points on Jan Siberas’ first stage 46.01, Parkinson fired off a solid 48.02 and watched as Sibera fell two points shy of the required target of 91.06. Dennis Lavelle had a day to forget, collecting everything from a centre bull’s eye to a miss (bull's eye on the wrong target) while Tim Halloran shot a good waterline 43.0, before changing coaches and suffering a disappointing 38.01, second effort. Jason Bemrose had two steady shoots, cracking forty both stages, but inexperience in the difficult conditions was his main drawback. Graham Willis suffered the same fate as the full bore contingent, as the scoped marauder collected several inners and the occasional outer in a super V-less 46/60. A far better effort in the second stage produced a couple of super V’s in the resulting 55.2. Brodie Samuels battled an oversized rifle, lack of a shooting coat and the conditions to stay on the target, and the addition of a stock rest, late in his second stage provided the steadiness he needed to shoot with greater precision. Sibera won the W & J Brown Shield comfortably from Graham Willis. The stage returns to the 300-yard mound next week with the B Gurdon Cup and A Pratley Shield to be conducted over all six ranges in the next three weeks SCORES: J Sibera 89.04 (16) 100 G Bright 96.10 (1 ½) 97 ½ A Parkinson 91.06 (5 ¼) 96 ¼ G P Willis 101.2 (14 ½) 96 ¼ G Shepherd 89.07 (6) 95 T Halloran 81.03 (13 ¾) 94 ¾ D Lavelle 75.01 (9 ¾) 84 ¾ B Samuels 62 (20) 68 ½ J Bemrose 83.01

The seemingly benign conditions offered all shooters their best prospect of a big total but nobody went within cooee of a double possible, all hopes of such, disappearing in a dismal first stage. John Coghill went closest to a possible, but jagged an inner four at 10 o’clock for a reasonably competent 49.02. Graeme Bright dropped two shots, mid-stage, for 48.03 with Dennis Lavelle the next best on 46.04. Lavelles’ stage was marked by a wide magpie three to start, and three super V’s to finish. Jason Bemrose in only his second full bore shoot was quite tidy but a late magpie put a dent in his score. Gordon Shepherd started and finished with a pair of centre bulls, but his mid-stage was almost comical as the spotter jumped from one side of the bulls eye to the other as the inner count mounted. Jan Sibera was never in the hunt as a growing number of inners and magpies coloured his scorecard. In F class Geoff Willis dropped three points with his first shot magpie but then climbed off the mat to scramble a 52.1. Graham Willis rarely found the centre and an early inner four limited his score to that of his brother, minus the super V. The second stage proved even worse than the first with Coghill emulating Shepherds’ first stage, Lavelle going backwards, the Willis brothers swapping their first stage scores, and Bemrose unable to sustain his good early showing. Shepherd and Sibera made some inroads with improved showings but were never really going to figure highly in the results. Bright was the only competitor on the day to show any worthwhile form but even he was unable to notch a possible, his 49.03 falling just short, a pesky mid-stage inner four the culprit. Bright took out the A grade Cock of the Walk easily and Sibera, the B grade, almost by default. With the Willis brothers on identical 107.1 scores, Graham Willis’ second stage super V got him home on count back. Steve Williams shot exceptionally well at the State Champion of Champions going into the final 800-metre range as one of just three shooters with clean scorecards. Unfortunately Williams dropped two shots at 800, finishing fifth with 198.22, behind the winner Steve Negus of Metropolitan DRA on 199.26, and just 4 centres off second place. The pair, with stages of 48.02, out shone the rest of the field, who could not match their mastery over the wind. Graeme Bright and Gordon Shepherd both shot 47’s, Brights’ including a magpie, whilst Dennis Lavelle and John Coghill also visited the magpie ring in their less than flattering stages of 45.03 and 45.0 With the days’ honours at stake, Lavelle was not able to hold his challenge together, a couple of inner fours coming late in his second stage, whilst Shepherd failed to grab his opportunities, losing shots either side of the bulls eye in the gusty wind. Shepherds’ 93.06 did, however, set the bar for later shooters. Both Parkinson and Sibera failed to live up to their early form and fell short of the required total, Parkinson by just one centre bulls eye. A large black cloud drifting across the face of the sun gave Sibera a sighting nightmare, 41.01 being the end result. Coghill emerged as an unlikely challenger when Bright failed to put the win out of reach, losing two points to loose shots, to give him a total of 95.06. Coghill, despite shooting a 49.03, the best stage of the day, fell one point short of the boilover win. Brights’ COW win puts some interest back into the A grade contest bringing him within two wins of Steve Williams but Parkinson has opened up a 4 win gap over Sibera for the B grade title. F class proved a much tighter contest than appeared on paper, with Geoff Willis appearing late on the scene after a day at work. Jeff Eppleston who had finished both stages before Willis appeared, only carded a moderate 107.7 total which included two inner fours in a first stage 53.04. Willis matched the 53/60 first stage achieved by Eppleston but an inner four and a string of bulls eyes cut short his challenge as it appeared he was set for an unexpected win. The F class pair, however, won the days handicap honours both achieving 100%. Parkinson held on to win the J Sibera Trophy from Coghill by ¾ of a point. The W & J Brown Shield will commence next week at 700 yards. Williams, who will represent the Bathurst Rifle Club and the Blue Mountains District Rifle Association at the state championships, gave another fine performance when he warmed up for that event with a big double possible 100.14. Williams’ seven super V’s even surpassed Epplestons’ total of six inside the smallest ring. Their were several other notable performances, Graeme Brights’ 99.08, Gordon Shepherds’ 99.06 and Adam Parkinsons’ 96.06, being foremost among them. A late inner four in his first stage 49.02 put Bright out of business but he chased Williams all the way with a 50.06 second stage. Shepherd on the other hand kept his chances of a Cock of the Walk win alive with a 50.04 first stage but a late second stage inner four sealed his fate and saw him having to settle for third placing behind Williams and Bright. Parkinson just continues to improve and with stages of 49.04 and 47.02 he easily won the B grade, and is watching his handicap drop to the levels of the A grade shooters. Parkinson should tackle the upcoming open prize meetings, from Cootamundra to Lithgow, with his confidence at a premium. John Coghill and Dennis Lavelle had a close tussle at the tail end of the pack, Coghill, pipping Lavelle by a single centre bullseye, 94.06 to 94.07 and Jan Sibera continued his up and down season as he strives for consistency. Scores of 45.03 and 47.0 were not what he had planned at the beginning of the day but all three shooters achieved 100 handicap points. The Willis brothers again entered into their own world of conflict with Graham holding the smallest of margins over brother Geoff in both stages. Geoff fell one point short of Grahams’ 53.1, but he threw down the gauntlet with a second stage 58.1, only to see Graham rise to the occasion with a 59.4 to snatch the silver by two shots, both shooters achieving the 100 handicap points. Parkinson and Lavelle lead the J Sibera Trophy with the maximum 200/200 from Coghill on 199. The Sibera Trophy concludes next week at 600 yards. Steve Williams took the lead with a 49.05 and Adam Parkinson continued his great form shooting 48.04 with Dennis Lavelle notching 48.02. Brights’ 47.02 was next, followed by John Coghill and Jason Bemrose on 46.03 with Ron Gibson on 46.02. Bemrose at his first attempt at full bore, after shooting off the rest for six weeks, put the cat among the pigeons by upstaging most of the regulars. Jan Sibera, still fiddling with sight rings and posts, couldn’t finish off the stage, a three inner finish following a run of centre bulls eyes. Gordon Shepherd also didn’t take to the short range and whether it was the new sight or a misreading of the fluky fishtail, the best he could manage was, 44.0 Another to fall foul of the small target was F class shooter Graham Willis, who included no less than 4 inners in his 48.1. After such a devastating first stage Willis atoned somewhat with a fine 57.3, second stage, to at least put some credibility to his scorecard. Williams made it very difficult for his competitors with another 49.06 and proved just too good again, as one by one the challengers fell by the wayside. Brights 50.05 was a reminder of a chance forgone, Williams securing the COW. Parkinson held his group together to record a 48.01, his total by far the best of his 300-yard shoots, and equal to his best ever score, the B grade COW a just reward. Coghill had the luckiest shoot of the day, his 48.0 including no less than six shots cutting the bulls eye line, some of which could best be described as mere nicks. Lavelle finished well but some early inners spoiled his chances whilst Gibsons’ stage was the opposite, with a good start ruined by an inner laden finish. Shepherd hoisted his output to 46.04 but remained disappointed, and Sibera went back to the workshop for more work on the sights. Bemrose was not as steady in the late afternoon but his first true full-bore shoot produced a most encouraging 87.05. Tim Hallorans’ day improved as it wore on with scores of 43/60 and 50.2/60 pointing to the adage, practice makes perfect. Bright traveled to the Ungarie Rifle Club Open Prize Meeting last week where he won the 800 yard range with 50.08 but his wayward shots returned in the 900 yard and 1000 yard ranges leaving him nonplussed and disconsolate. The J Sibera Trophy continues next week at 500 yards.
