The same could not be said of Dennis Lavelle, Adam Parkinson, and John Coghill all of whom could manage no better than 45. Lavelle collected four centre bullseyes, Parkinson, three, and Coghill, two, but their day was consigned to the pursuit of lesser honours. Jan Siberas’ up and down season continued and he was only able to scrape together a 42.01 with no less than three fat magpie 3’s. F class was little better as the Willis brothers had matching inners in their unflattering 53’s, Geoff Willis’ two super V bulls, aside. Jason Bemrose and Brodie Samuels having not previously experienced such dull conditions, had difficulty getting a clear picture. The second stage saw a complete turn around with both Bright and Shepherd pushing for the overall COW and the lesser lights for lower honours. Bright overcame his recent elevation problems to shoot 49.06 and snatch a narrow one-point lead over Shepherd who compiled 49.03. The surprise of the day was a complete blackout by Williams, who misjudging the fading light, went for a small front sight ring and paid with a disastrous 45.03, to gift Bright the Cock of the Walk. Lavelle came home strongly with a 49.05 (after the horse had bolted) but Coghill could not even make that claim, compiling just 46.01. As the light faded and the breeze died Parkinson kept his fingers off the sight and crafted an excellent 48.05 in the difficult conditions to take the B grade COW; his eighth in the past nine shoots. Sibera was left wondering if he needed to rethink his sight choices, another poor 43.01 stage hitting his scorecard. The only real highlight in F class was Graham Willis who shot a 57.3, to easily take the honours from brother Geoff by 5 points. Bemrose in his last shoot off the rest was not at his best in the murky light but Samuels under Williams’ tutelage and using the champions’ rifle gained a big insight into the art of “night time” shooting. An early run of magpies was followed with a nice little run of bullseyes in a 42/60. Jan Sibera, despite a shocker, got under the handicappers guard with his inconsistency to take out the C R Kelly Cup by ½ a point from the equally inconsistent Coghill. The J Sibera Trophy commences next week at 300 yards. Graeme Bright, Gordon Shepherd and Adam Parkinson all started the day with 49’s, Bright attacking the centre bulls eye with a vengeance, 6 centres being his reward; his only failing, a last shot inner four. Whilst not matching Brights' centre count, Shepherd finally overcame his sight difficulties with three centres of his own whilst Parkinson continued his development with a 49.02. John Coghills’ sling detached midway through his shoot and the mishap (unnoticed) resulted in a run of inner four, magpie three, inner four in a disappointing 46.02, after a super V, centre bulls-eye start. Jan Sibera never really got into gear and a 45.02 was the end result. A reluctant Keith Redding struggled to come to grips with the cold and pulled out of the contest after a 30.01. The second stage boiled down to a contest in two when Adam Parkinson was unable to match his first stage heroics. After a centre bull start, it was all down hill, two magpies and an inner four dominating his 45.03. A bright future in full bore rifle shooting awaits Parkinson as he gains consistency, with experience. This was Parkinsons’ eleventh B grade COW, and he is now just one win behind Sibera in the race for the seasons' honour. Brights’ trend of recent weeks continued when he went from a very tight group with heaps of centres, to a shotgun group, using every quadrant of the bullseye. His 49.0 left a hole for Shepherd to exploit. And that is exactly what Shepherd did with a 49.05 to snatch the COW from under Brights' nose by two centre bulls-eyes. Shepherds’ front sight trauma is, hopefully, a thing of the past. Sibera and Coghill both came up with 48.03’s, and whilst pleasing, they were not in the contest after their first stage failures. F Class was almost over before it started as Jeff Eppleston warmed up for the Champion of Champion shoot at Lithgow on Sunday. A 57 (with two super V’s) was too much for Graham Willis who had a rare off day with scores of 51.2 and 52.1. Eppleston could not sustain the quality of his first stage but a 54.3, which surprisingly contained an inner four, was more than enough to win F class. Jason Bemrose continued his education, completing his second last shoot off the rest before moving to the full bore discipline. Bemrose has handled the rifle with ease and his scores of 48.1 and 47.1 are testament to his rapid progress. The C R Kelly Cup will conclude next Saturday at 900 yards. SCORES: J Coghill 94.05 (7 ¼) 100 A Parkinson 94.05 (5 ½) 99 ½ G Shepherd 98.08 (1 ¼) 99 ¼ J Sibera 93.05 (5 ½) 98 ½ G Bright 98.06 (1/2) 98 ½ J Eppleston 111.5 (5 ½) 97 G P Willis 103.3 (12) 95 ¾ J Bemrose 95.2 (15 ¼) 92 K Redding 30.01

Dennis Lavelle looked likely to challenge Bright but a double inner finish put paid to that idea and Adam Parkinson fell out of sync with the wind changes, stringing together 4 inners in a 45.02 score. John Coghill also faltered with an inner, magpie, inner finish in a rough 44.01 score line. Jan Siberas’ form abandoned him as he repeated Coghill’s poor finish, a far cry from the heroics of last week. Bright had a wild second stage 46.02 which convinced him that it was time to run the brush through his barrel and remove the fouling, built up after more than 100 consecutive shots. Coghill and Parkinson both had improved second stage 47.04’s, but whereas Parkinsons' dropped shots were scattered throughout his stage, Coghill added a high magpie to an early inner. Lavelle had a strange second stage with a double inner start and finish, cruelling his chance of an upset. Sibera climbed off the carpet but didn’t set the house on fire as he contemplated some sight modifications. With the in form pair of Jeff Eppleston and Graham Willis the only F Class contenders, the day held hope of a close match. So it turned out to be but not in the way envisaged. Eppleston peppered the super V until an uncharacteristic inner four imposed itself on his scorecard; the 56.5 still a good tight shoot. Willis started slowly and slipped an inner four onto his card in an unconvincing 53.01. The second stage was a reversal of the first with Epplestons' group widening to frightening proportions as he struggled to a 54.1. Willis tried hard to grab the opportunity but his task was made difficult by a double bulls eye start and his score of 56.3 was just 1.2 points short of the mark. Winners on the day were Bright (A grade COW), Parkinson (B Grade COW) and Eppleston (F Class). The regional Champion of Champions and Peacock Cup shoots will be held at Lithgow next Sunday 4th July with Bathursts’ Steve Williams and Jeff Eppleston going up against other district champions in a bid to represent the Blue Mountains District Rifle Association in the NSW State Champion of Champions in late July The C R Kelly Cup will continue next Saturday at 800 yards. Graeme Bright looked set for an easy win after a 50.06 first stage but was no match for Sibera, falling away to a 46.01 second stage, his last 3 shots, disappointing inners fours. John Coghills' 93.06, contained few standouts and some real downers, with a wild second stage magpie three, and an inner four of similar shape defining his days' contribution. Dennis Lavelle likewise, overplayed the inner four ring, and finished with a 93.03. Adam Parkinson also had a string of inners in a first stage 43.01 but redemption came quickly with a really solid 49.03, second stage. Gordon Shepherd is all at sea with his new sights and gave the markers a real workout with both stages littered with inner fours and magpies, recording his worst score this year. Eppleston continued his recent good form with a comfortable win in F class, although the rapidly improving Graham Willis kept in touch falling just one shot short in each stage, going down 108.3 to 110.6. A rushed Geoff Willis fell away with a 50.0 second stage and almost let Jason Bemrose in, using just peep sights. Bemrose and Brodie Samuel are shooting off a rest, without the advantage of telescopes, to gain experience in the art of full bore shooting. In the F A Wilde Trophy, Coghill staggered over the line to win from Sibera who finished with maximum handicap points, taking the trophy by a narrow margin, 297 to 296 ½. Steve Williams has just returned from Darwin, where he was a member of the NSW Rifle team, which won the National Teams Championship (The Merritt Match), last week. Also on travelers, Eppleston had a very successful weekend at the Parkes Open Prize meeting at Eugowra where he won both 600-yard ranges, and The Aggregate in the F class section. In a hotly contested competition Eppleston was forced into a shootoff to determine the outright winner, beating R Eager from Goulburn, five super V’s to three. To top off a good day, Eppleston combined with the Willis brothers, and R Garlick (Parkes,) to win the F class teams trophy The C R Kelly Cup is the next trophy for contention over 700, 800 and 900 yards commencing next Saturday the 26th June. Dennis Lavelle and John Coghill both carded 47’s but Lavelles’ chances were ruined with repeated misfires necessitating a change of ammunition, and finally second stage retirement, with a bolt malfunction. Coghill went on to record a 49.02 second stage and second place on the day. Gordon Shepherd had a shocker with a 44.02, despite sporting his new sights, putting inner fours together like a string of beads. A more consistent second stage 48.02 was more in line with his usual form. Jan Sibera was more consistent this time and his .223 calibre handled the conditions quite well but his 4 inner first stage start set a pattern of wasted opportunities, and a second stage double inner finish put a damper on a day that showed promise. Graham Mellish, very rusty after a long time away from the sport, kept the fall of shot in the black but rarely troubled the bull’s eye. Jason Bemrose with his own Omark .308, sighted the rifle in and then pushed the F class competitors all the way despite only having peep sights. Brodie Samuel while not showing a big improvement with his scores is all the time tightening his group; only fatigue related shots holding up a big breakthrough. The Willis brothers continued their personal feud in F class with Geoff gaining a four point break on Graham only to squander the advantage by shooting a rough 53 second stage. Graham needing a 57 to tie and take the COW on count back, could manage just 56, a last shot bulls eye cutting him off at the final hurdle. Coghill has a stranglehold on the F A Wilde Trophy leading by 2 ¾ points but will need to shoot up to the standard of his last two outings to hold off the trailing group. The F A Wilde trophy will conclude next week at 600 yards. SCORES: J Coghill 96.03 (4 ¾) 100 G S Willis 109 (12 ½) 100 J Sibera 91.05 (9 ¼) 100 G Bright 98.11 (1/4) 98 ¼ G Shepherd 92.04 (5 ¾) 97 ¾ G P Willis 108 (6 ¾) 95 ½ G Mellish 77.01 J Bemrose 102/120 B Samuels 77/120 D Lavelle 47.03
