The less than ideal situation led to poor results for most of the “Tassy” entrants despite calm, clear weather and good shooting conditions. The exception was Dennis Lavelle who entered the B grade section and compiled a solid 98.05 in the continuous 20 shot match. The Australia wide competition typically produces very hot scoring and Lavelle appears to be the only Bathurst local in with a chance. Steve Williams 98.09 and Graeme Bright 98.10 competing in A grade where double possibles are the norm, appear to be out of the running and of the F class entrants Graham Willis 111 appears the only likely contender as Jeff Eppleston 109 and Geoff Willis 105 may not have done enough to push their claims for a badge. Jan Sibera had an off day scoring just 88.03 in a disappointing effort. The targets will be returned to Launceston VDC Rifle Club for adjudication. Amongst those not competing in the Tassy shoot scores were generally average with a couple of good stages brightening the day. Ron Gibson 90.06 and Keith Redding 82.01 had little to get excited about but both scored 100 handicap Points, as did John Coghill, 93.05, and Adam Parkinson, 91.03, the latter pair at least getting some joy from excellent second stage 48’s after poor first stages. It was pleasing to see 12-year old Brodie Samuels on the mound and using the heavy 7.62 mm calibre rifle. Samuels shot in F class with just peep sights and without the advantage of a telescope. His two stages of 47 showed real maturity and a strong understanding of the principles of full bore shooting. His groups tightened as the day wore on and a tally of 5 central bulleyes was an excellent result. Bright won the days honours by a single centre bulls eye from Williams, Parkinson won B grade, and Graham Willis continued his giant killing run with another F grade triumph. The last 600 yard championship round and the last range of the L Williams cup will be staged next Saturday May 8th with no less than 5 competitors equal on the maximum 200/200 handicap points SCORES: D Lavelle 98.05 (6) 100 R Gibson 90.06 (14 ¾) 100 A Parkinson 91.03 (12 ¼) 100 J Eppleston 109 (14 ½) 100 J Coghill 93.05 (8 ¼) 100 J Sibera 88.03 (14) 100 K Redding 82.01 (18 ¼) 100 S Williams 98.09 (1) 99 G Bright 98.10 (1) 99 G P Willis 111 (7 ¼) 98 ½ G S Willis 105 (11 ¼) 97 B Samuels 94/120

The surprise of the day was the return to form of John Coghill who has been hopelessly out of sorts for several months. Coghill showed a glimpse of his previous form last week at the 900-yard range but nobody could have predicted Saturdays result. A silly zeroing error cost him an inner four start but he did not leave the bulls eye ring for the remainder of the day to take out the Cock of the Walk. Coghills’ last stage 50.03 possible was his first in many months. Gordon Shepherd led out the scoring with a 49.05 but failed to maintain the high level, slipping to a 47.03 second stage with 3 inner fours in his last four shots, including a double inner finish. Ron Gibson also fell foul of a double inner finish in a first stage 48.03 but he maintained his composure to shoot a repeat 48.03 and take out the B grade title, his several weeks on the sidelines not appearing to have affected his demeanor on the mound. Adam Parkinson, another who has had some down time, was a little rusty and consecutive inners brought about his downfall but he collected several solid bulls and centres along the way. Jan Siberas’ first stage 43.0 put him out of the running from the start but a 48.02 comeback was some consolation. Dennis Lavelle was again in trouble with his .223 calibre (43.03) and even though he came back with a 47.02 second stage he remained disconsolate with the firearm. Keith Redding after being accused of being the rainmaker retired from the mound with a 39.2 single stage choosing not to risk a wet return. In F Class the introduction of the “Superbull”, a centre bulls eye ring half the size of the normal centre, created great interest as Jeff Eppleston set about taking advantage of the benign weather conditions. The Superbull, which carries a 6.1 point score, has been introduced to further separate the ultra accurate F class shooters. Eppleston didn’t let us down with a score of 118.8 shooting just the one bulls eye in each of his stages and slotting 8 Superbulls in the process. Next Saturday will be a special 600-yard match incorporating the Tasmanian Postal shoot, with the L Williams Cup, or a 500-yard shoot if the targets do not arrive from Launceston in time. ((Steve Williams sojourn to Bendigo, Victoria, for the VRA Queens prize meeting saw him again among the badge winners and keeps his name in the top echelon of Australia’s full bore shooters. Williams collected high-level badges in all three events he contested. A 3rd placing on day one of “The Syme” with 150.16, and a 9th in “The Syme” Aggregate was followed by a 10th badge in the Queens Aggregate, and similarly a 10th badge in the Grande Aggregate.)) Bathurst Rifle Club 17th April 2010 The Captains Trophy 900 yards After the first two 900 yard rounds of the Club Championship were bedeviled by highly unfavourable weather conditions, Saturdays perfect weather offered shooters a rare chance to dominate the longest of the ranges at the home of the Bathurst Rifle Club. Whilst there were some good stories out of the day's competition, with most of the previous scores being consigned to the cutting table, not all were happy with the end result. Gordon Shepherd using the "new improved" .308 ammunition plied his wares well with a pair of 49's with 9 central bulls-eyes to take out the days Cock of the Walk. Shepherds disappointment at not achieving a possible was further magnified when Dennis Lavelle using his smaller .223 calibre was able to achieve that feat at his second visit to the mound. A 47.05 first stage however, prevented Lavelle from toppling Shepherd from the top position. Lavelle appears to have finally overcome his ammunition problems and is looking forward to mounting a serious challenge to his bigger bore competitors.

Williams’ only blemish in a superb first stage was his decision to keep his first sighter, a bulls' eye, before reeling off nine centre bulls to complete the 50.09 stage. Another fine shoot followed but this time three bulls eyes crept onto the scorecard as Williams ended the day with a 100.16 score, easily eclipsing the years previous best. The next few weeks will see Williams traveling to Bendigo to contest the VRA Queens Prize and then returning to Sydney to contest the Metropolitan DRA on Anzac day. It was a reasonable day for most of the other contestants as the mild conditions favoured good scoring. However good scores were not guaranteed as inattention and bad decisions caused hiccups throughout the day. Graeme Brights’ magpie in each stage, Dennis Lavelles’ double inner finish and John Coghills’ failure to find the target in his first three shots were the types of errors that characterized a disappointing day for some. Gordon Shepherd and Jan Sibera started well with 49’s, Siberas’ with a superior centre bull tally, but only Shepherd was able to consolidate his first stage 49.02, shooting a second stage 50.06 possible, to slip into the runner up position. Sibera fumbled his good start with a second stage 47.02 but Coghill and Lavelle redeemed themselves somewhat with scores of 49.05 and 49.04. Bright was never in contention after a first stage 46.02 with elevation becoming a real worry in many of his recent shoots. Keith Redding continues to resist the temptation to go to F class with its telescopic sights and is finding the peep sights a big test for his eyes. F class was a very tight affair, with Mr. Consistency, Jeff Eppleston, scraping out a one shot win over the Willis brothers. With a pair of 57’s Eppleston held off the Willis’ challenge as Graham Willis flew home with a 59/60 after a less than happy 54 and Geoff Willis jagged an inner four to cruel his second stage fight back. Next week is the 900-yard conclusion to the Captains Trophy and also a Championship shoot.
