The result of the change has seen some remarkable reversals of form with shooters failing dismally one week and running away with the competition the next week. John Coghill was the latest to show a huge improvement in form, after failing dismally last week, with a runaway win in the overall Cock of the Walk, (COW), shooting 97.05. Coghills’ score was two points better than Gordon Shepherd whose new sights continue to cause a few running-in problems. Shepherd fired almost a full stage before hitting the target, as the act of zeroing the rifle became a nightmare. One however, who has come to grips with the situation is Adam Parkinson, and he continued his run of B grade wins with his seventh COW in his last eight shoots. In F class Jeff Epplestons’ new barrel is showing excellent results, a 118.9, with a second stage possible 60.5 capping a great day. With 9 from 20 shots hitting the super V, a small ring half the size of the centre bulls eye, Epplestons' accuracy is eye catching. Although conditions were almost perfect for full bore target shooting scoring in general was only moderate. With the odd magpie three thrown in and inner fours becoming very common, the bulk of the competitors battled to reach a competitive score. Graeme Brights’ elevation woes continued with a pair of 47’s and Dennis Lavelle, 91.04, was steady without threatening. Jan Sibera continued his up and down form, this time reversing his usual sequence of poor first stage, good second, with a 46.04 first and 40.0 second stage. Veteran Keith Redding, in his 80th year, continues to enjoy the sport as the changes introduce new challenges and new experiences and really test his metal. Brodie Samuels introduction the full bore shooting is hampered by club gear not suited to the younger person, but his grasp of the fundamentals is showing with much tighter groups and more consistent scores. Jason Bemrose, a left-hander, was also hampered by having to use a right-handed rifle, quite a difficult operation in prone full-bore rifle shooting. Graham Willis (F class) squeezed his group into 5 super V’s before slipping to a three bulls eye finish in his 57.5, second stage whilst brother Geoff improved three points on his first stage 52.1 with a 55.2 second. The F A Wilde trophy will continue next week at 500 yards. The first stage had Gordon Shepherd with a new front sight setting the pace with a 49.06 and Graeme Bright not far behind on 48.02. Adam Parkinson was next with a 47.02 but scores tailed off rapidly from that point, Dennis Lavelle scratching to post a 45.02. F class was little better with Graham Willis’ 53/60 the best, on a moderate scorecard. It was not until the second stage that scores improved and Lavelle produced the gem of the day with a 50.04 possible. Eppleston just missed the “lot” with a 59/60, the dropped point coming on his last shot. Both shooters won the days honours in their respective grades, Lavelle taking overall COW and Eppleston F grade. Parkinson put up an excellent performance shooting 48.02 to fall short of overall honours by a mere 2 centre bulls eyes but he easily won the B grade COW. Parkinsons form surge came a little to late for the Club Championship as he contested only one 900-yard range and thus failed to qualify in what almost certainly would have been his first major trophy win. Shepherd came a huge cropper as his group widened and inner fours flowed. His fall from grace was soon explained when after a pair of magpies to finish his shoot the new front sight tumbled to the turf as the sound of the last shot reverberated across the range. A very wobbly finish to what was going to be a good introduction for the new technology. Jan Sibera had a day to forget, recording his lowest score in recent memory and he came away none the wiser as to the cause. John Coghill also bombed out with magpies and outers scattered over his scorecard and Bright went backwards with a scattered 45.04 The Willis brothers reversed their first stages but neither was happy with the result. Geoff who suffered a first stage miss fought back with a 56 but Graham could manage no better than 51. With the Championship over for 2010, normal competition continues next week at 300 yards with the F A Wilde Trophy up for contest. The Club Championship winners were; A grade- Steve Williams with 777.71/800 from Bright 761.58 B Grade- Sibera on 707.25 F Grade- Eppleston 850/880 from Graham Willis 831 The Secretary’s Trophy was a very tight affair with the F class pair of Eppleston and Geoff Willis going to a handicap count back, Eppleston adding another to his bag of trophies in 2010. From that point the scores fell away with John Coghills’ 47.03 heading a bunch of mediocre results. An unusual occurrence saw Gordon Shepherd lose 5 points when he challenged a magpie, only be told there was no other bullet hole on his target Jan Sibera again got off to a poor start while Keith Redding played with the magpie and outer rings. The Willis brothers Graham, 54/60, and Geoff, 53/60, were off the pace as Graham toyed with old ammunition and Geoff used the small .223 calibre rifle over the long distance. The second stage brought Lavelle and Parkinson back to earth with Lavelle copping a couple of early inner fours and a magpie and two inners appearing on Parkinson’s’ scorecard. The highlights were Bright, who completed the double possible with a 50.07, although some bulls went perilously close to the inner four line, and Eppleston, who banished his first stage boo-boo with a 60/60 possible. Shepherd, smarting over his first stage gaff, shot a 49.07 and Sibera, as he has been want to do of late, came back hard with a 48.02. Neither Gibson nor Coghill could make much improvement on their first stages and Redding was not in the groove, slipping to a 38.0. Graham Willis just held off brother Geoff both scoring 58/60 whilst newcomer Jason Pemrose encountered trigger problems and had to change rifles during his shoots of 43/60 and 37/60. Triggers seemed to be the problem of the day as Coghill also attempted to deal with a heavy trigger. Bright won the A grade COW, Parkinson his third straight B grade and Eppleston, the F class honour. Congratulations to Eppleston and Parkinson who achieved their highest scores since joining the club. Steve Williams is off to Darwin next week as a NSW State team member contesting the State teams championship and he will compete individually in the Northern Territory Queens Prize, a competition he came so close to winning in 2008, finishing second in all three legs of the prestigious meet. The Club Championship and the Secretary’s Trophy will conclude next week at 900 yards. Graeme Bright is having a difficult time trying to work out the cause of wayward shots, which have become an all too frequent occurrence of late. He again failed to capitalize on the perfect weather conditions, an inner four intruding on each of his stages of 49.06 and 49.03. Gordon Shepherd also lost out by way of an early inner four and he collected three more in a disappointing second stage 47.04 as inconsistency begins to rare its ugly head. In B grade Adam Parkinson whose work commitments limit his appearances on the mound picked up a fourth COW in his last 5 shoots. Parkinson had a relatively easy win after his two main competitors Ron Gibson and Jan Sibera got away to slow starts and could not bridge the gap. Gibson matched Parkinsons’ second stage 45.01 and Sibera improved 5 shots on his first stage 41.01 but the rush was too little, too late. Not much could be said of the others as John Coghill reverted to his scattergun form of the recent past and Keith Redding and Tim Halloran were not in the hunt on the day. Graham Willis’ run at the F Class championship, after a very late start to the season, is still alive after a steady 110/120. A last shot inner four seriously hurt Willis’ chances and he will need to surpass all previous shoots to topple 3 time winner Jeff Eppleston who holds a comfortable lead of 17 points coming into the last 900 yard range on May 29th. Willis can pick up 19 points with a double possible and needs Eppleston to fail to add further points. Willis beat his brother, Geoff Willis, to the days COW, his fourth in a row, as he continues his great run of form. Year 10 student Brodie Samuels continued to impress with a pair of 43/60 stages. Shooting F class without a telescope is a huge handicap but it helps develop all the techniques associated with prone full bore rifle shooting. Jason Bemrose fired a 50/60 single stage, also off the rest, surpassing his previous best of 43/60. Williams won the A grade I Hughes Cup, and Parkinson, the J Porter Trophy, his first trophy win since joining the club late last year. The Secretarys’ Trophy will be conducted over the next two weeks at 800 and 900 yards. Williams, clearly the clubs premier marksman, shot stages of 50.03 and 50.06 to claim his 10th Cock of the Walk for the year. Graeme Bright, Williams’ only real competition in 2010, could not quite match the Champ and fell one point short of a possible in each of his 49.06 and 49.03 stages. John Coghill who is gradually regaining some semblance of form also shot a pair of 49’s with four central bulls eyes in each stage to finish in the top three on the day. Dennis Lavelle had the days best centre count with 10 centrals but was fooled on occasion by a fluky mirage which caused him to drop 5 points in his 47.04 and 48.06 stages. Ron Gibson threatened at times but found finishing a chore as his last shot inner fours indicated. Scores of 47.02 and 46.02 could have been so much better but for the late blemishes. Gordon Shepherd, Jan Sibera and Keith Redding all had up and down days for down and up results. Shepherd, a little rusty from a couple of weeks off started with a 46.04 but finished strongly with 49.05 and Sibera while not having the same excuse shot a rough 44.01 with a 4 inner finish before rounding the day off with a contrasting 48.05. Veteran Keith Redding went 9 points better in his second stage after a discouraging first stage of outers and magpies. In F class the Willis brothers challenged one another yet again and Graham retained bragging rights with a 113 to 106 win over brother Geoff the latter handicapped by a mad rush to get to the range after work. Newcomers Jason Bemrose and Terry McDonald, both regular bush shooters, fired 10 shots apiece through the club rifle, off a rest, and their scores of 43/60 and 38/60 appeared to spark their interest in full bore shooting. The L Williams Cup was a very tight affair and the scores were symbolic of the excellent shooting weather experienced over the past few weeks. There were three scores of 300/300 and the winner had to be determined by calculating the percentage of total handicap used. Coghill was declared the winner having used the least handicap (47%) from Gibson (63%) and Sibera (79%) The I Hughes Cup and J Porter Trophy and the last 700-yard Championship shoot for 2010 will be held on 15th May SCORES: S Williams 100.09 (1/2) 100 J Coghill 98.08 (4 ¾) 100 J Sibera 92.06 (13 ½) 100 R Gibson 93.04 (10 ¾) 100 D Lavelle 95.10 (4 ½) 99 ½ G Bright 98.09 (1 ¼) 99 ¼ G S Willis 106 (13) 99 ¼ G P Willis 113 (5 ¾) 99 G Shepherd 95.09 (3 ½) 98 ½ K Redding 71.01 (20) 91 J Bemrose 43/60 T McDonald 38/60
