Gordon Shepherd set the scene with the very first stage of the day as his 50.04 put everyone on notice that he meant business. Try as they might no one could match Shepherds’ possible although Jan Sibera came close with a 49.02, losing his point on the third last shot, and Graeme Bright with a double inner four mid stage posted a 48.05. Jeff Eppleston in F class just missed the possible with a 59/60, again the third last shot bringing him undone. The Willis brothers battled it out with Graham, 52, topping Geoff after the latter found it difficult to hone in on the target. Starting with double outers for his sighters and the first counting shots being magpie-inner, Geoff settled into a more consistent mode to finish the stage at 50/60. Adam Parkinson couldn’t tighten his group enough to post a competitive score and Dennis Lavelle suffered the same affliction, both scoring 42, with Lavelle adding a solitary centre bull to his score. Bright started the second stage with a big 49.06 to take the lead after an early dropped shot but Sibera trumped him with another 49.03 leaving Shepherd, his only danger, to shoot last. With the pressure on, Shepherd faltered mid stage, and again with three shots to go but held it together to shoot a double centre finish, securing the Cock of the Walk on a centre bull count out. Both Parkinson and Lavelle pulled the drawstrings on their groups and recorded greatly improved results. Parkinsons’ score, (45), was spoiled by a last shot magpie, and Lavelle’s (48.03) by a similarly late inner four. Sibera however was untroubled to win B grade by a wide margin. The F grade was all over when Eppleston shot a 55, which included a surprise inner four, a fate also striking Geoff Willis in his 54. Brother Graham, seemed to have his measure until an outer two from nowhere, derailed his charge, losing 4 points in one shot, and bragging rights over his sibling. Keith Redding like so many veterans couldn,t over come wobbly eyesight but still managed to punch holes in the target all day. His 69.0 was not one of his better days. Sibera has jumped out to a 3-point lead over Eppleston in the J Wilde Memorial trophy, which concludes next week at 900 yards. However the hope soon disappeared and the battle against the elements recommenced as, one after another, shooters found the wind variations impossible to judge. Graeme Bright with a 47.05, Steve Williams, 46.04, and John Coghill, 45.02, were the better of the first stage scores, but their cards were regularly interspersed with inner fours. The trees on the east side of the range had little dampening affect on the gusts of wind and the centre bulls eye was barely touched as shooters were blind to crucial wind changes. Jeff Eppleston with a 51/60 was the best of the F class shooters but two inner fours were a real dampener. Geoff and Graham Willis both had 46/60 and centre bulls eyes were a scarce commodity. The second stage produced some significant form reversals, the most notable being Jan Sibera, who shot the days best, a 48.06, after a magpie strewn first stage 42.01 seemed to put him out of the picture. Williams and Bright went shot for shot, both finishing with 93.08 after reversing their first stage scores. Coghill and Gordon Shepherd also swapped stage scores both finishing with identical 86.03 scorecards, Coghill crashing to a nine inner finish 41.01 as Shepherd lifted to a 45.02. Adam Parkinson found something with a second stage 45.01 after a disappointing 40.0 first stage. Geoff Willis posted a second stage 50 as Eppleston faltered with 48 but the mountain was too high and Eppleston won by 3 points Williams won the A grade Cock of the Walk on count back, but Bright can put his loss down to a double inner finish when a single bulls eye would have carried the day. Sibera easily won B grade as he shot up to his handicap, and now takes a good lead in the J Wilde Memorial trophy. There will be a recess of two weeks, competition to resume on the 20th February, with the second round of the J Wilde Memorial Trophy at 800 yards. SCORES: J Sibera 90.07 (12 ½) 100 J Eppleston 99 (18) 97 ½ A Parkinson 85.01 (11 ¼) 96 ¼ S Williams 93.08 2 ¾) 95 ¾ G Bright 93.08 (2 ¾) 95 ¾ J Coghill 86.03 (9 ¼) 95 ¼ G S Willis 96 (17) 94 ¼ K Redding 76.03 (17 ¾) 93 ¾ G Shepherd 86.03 (6 ¼) 92 ¼ D Lavelle 39.0- Rtd.

Bathurst Rifle Club 23rd January 2010 The Gilmour Cup Final. 600 yards The following two paragraphs best describe the days' events at the Bathurst rifle range on Saturday. "The weather was particularly unfavourable for rifle shooting, a strong variable wind with frequent violent gusts and clouds of dust prevailed during the whole of the day". (From Bathurst Rifle Shooting, The Sydney Morning Herald, Monday 20th January 1873) "Though the weather was fine, an unfavourable wind blew across the range and this will probably account for the poorness of the shooting". (Bathurst Rifle Shooting, The Sydney Morning Herald, Tuesday 2nd January 1883). Nothing changed in that decade and nothing much appears to have changed in the intervening 127 years. The wind blew (this time, however, without the dust) and the scores told the miserable tale.

Bathurst Rifle Club 16th January 2010 The Gilmour Cup 500 yards The second round of the Gilmour Cup produced some exciting performances; none better than Tim Robinson who has been shooting full bore for less than one year. Robinson shot his first possible, a 50.05, and followed up with a 49.03 to push seasoned A grader, and former Club Champion Graeme Bright, right to the final shot. Robinson took out the handicap honours and the B grade COW and it appears that the new barrel fitted to the club rifle is finally allowing him to show his true potential. Bright had to pull out a big 50.07 to eclipse Robinson as the pair scooted away from the other contenders.

Bathurst Rifle Club 9th January 2010 The Gilmour Cup Competition for the 100-year old Gilmour Cup commenced under the best weather conditions experienced this season, and scores certainly took a leap forward. The quest for the elusive first season possible was finally settled late in the day when Steve Williams shot a very handy 50.06. Coupled with his near possible 49.05 first stage, Williams easily won the days Cock of the Walk and gained an early break on the field in the Club Championship race. Graeme Bright and Ron Gibson equaled Williams' first stage but could not go on with the job and tailed away with second stages of 48.02 and 45.03 respectively. Gordon Shepherd, John Coghill and Dennis Lavelle benefited from the milder conditions all shooting 48.02 first stages, but as the wind picked up they also fell by the wayside.
