Bathurst Rifle Club 2nd January 2010 The T W Willman Trophy
The New Year started as the old one finished, with a strong gusty southwesterly wind sweeping over the range. The conditions coupled with the smaller targets and the 900-yard range made it very difficult to attain any sort of decent score.
Whilst no one excelled, Dennis Lavelle took his new, small calibre, 5.56mm rifle to its maximum potential. Against the theory of, 'long distance, windy day', use a heavy calibre, Lavelle out shot all comers to win the days Cock of the Walk.
A first stage 45.01 was far from dominant but by following up with a 46.0 second stage Lavelle showed that the wind was not totally unreadable. Despite a pair of magpies in each stage he laid most of his shots in the bulls eye, collecting just the single inner four.
Nobody was immune, as the recent magpie blitz continued, with another 28 magpies three's and six outer two's were added to the seasons total.

Bathurst Rifle Club 26th December The N Rutherford Memorial Trophy
The wind finally cracked, the dust settled and the weather conditions at last favoured the shooters at the Bathurst rifle range on Saturday. With a chance to bury the ghosts of the past few months, a keen few attempted to overcome the new smaller targets and post some good scores.
It was not to be however as one mishap after another derailed the plans of a number of competitors. The F class shooters were in the majority as visitors Ken and Mathew Eppleston joined regulars Geoff Willis and Jeff Eppleston to carry the fight to the full bore contingent.

Bathurst Rifle Club 19th December The W Northcott Memorial Trophy
The run of windy days continued to harass shooters on Saturday, weather some say that has not been seen at the Bathurst range since the late 1970's. The southwest breeze again proved unconquerable with Gordon Shepherd shooting just the one standout stage to set up a one shot win over Graeme Bright and Steve Williams.
Shepherd got down after the first 3 shooters failed to score a single centre bulls' eye and peeled off a 48.03 setting a challenge to all who followed. Bright jagged a consecutive magpie and inner four in his 47.04 whilst Williams 46.0 included a run of three straight inner fours, which straddled the target. Shepherd came back to the pack with a second stage 45.03 including a magpie three, but held off Williams, who could only better his first stage by a single centre bulls eye, and Bright who slumped to a 45.02, two shots worse than his first stage.

Bathurst Rifle Club 12th December Diggers & G James Cups Final
Weather conditions again terrorized all shooters with a WSW breeze swinging in a 45-degree ark, but one thing is becoming abundantly clear this season. As difficult as the weeks have been since the introduction of the new targets, class will out, as Steve Williams translates his strong 2009-year in open competition, to the local range.
Williams, like the rest of the club members is not having an easy time of it, but his ability and experience is head and shoulders over his competitors. Despite a breeze which gusted from the right and flicked down range, Williams kept it together in his first stage 47.04 before steaming home with a 49.05 second stage. He blitzed all comers on the day and secured the first of the seasons majors, the off rifle Diggers Cup, by a resounding 7 shots.

Bathurst Rifle Club 5th December Diggers & G James Cups
The smaller targets are the common thread running through the poor early rounds of the 2010 season and they are providing shooters with a huge challenge to produce anything approaching a winning score. Weather is also a major factor, although Saturdays southwesterly breeze was much more friendly than in previous weeks.
New names appeared at the top of the winners charts this week with Adam Parkinson and Tim Robinson fighting out handicap honours and Parkinson taking out his first B grade Cock of the Walk after only 5 competition shoots. In A grade Gordon Shepherd produced some form of old to eclipse Club Champion Steve Williams by a mere 2 centre bulls eyes.
