Bathurst Rifle Club 25th July The J Sibera Trophy 300 yards The last full 300-yard range of the season was a good one for Graeme Bright who has shown an aversion to the short range for most of the season. Brights' 300-yard efforts let him down in this years Club Championship, but he finally overcame his hoodoo with a 100.13 double possible to take out the days Cock of the Walk. The weather was fine and mild but the northwesterly breeze whipped up a few surprises throughout the day with gusts and drop offs of up to two points. Steve Williams, on line to challenge Bright, was caught out by one of those bursts early in his second stage, dropping a shot to finish with 99.12. Dennis Lavelle continued to consolidate his A-grade status with stages of 48.03 and 49.04 and now needs to upgrade his front sight ring selection to take the next step. Gordon Shepherd failed to challenge the top three falling victim to a string of inner fours in his second stage 47.04 after a solid 49.05.

Bathurst Rifle Club 11th July The C R Kelly 900 yards An almost balmy winter day presented some good shooting conditions for the last 900-yard range of the C R Kelly cup. There were however, a number of missed opportunities, as shooters could not quite master the small but subtle variations throughout the afternoon. John Coghill lost a rare opportunity to top the day, missing vital wind shifts in both stages and then compounding the situation by disbelieving the wind change in the second. Stages of 49.03 and 48.02 couldn't hold out Graeme Bright who, despite dropping two points in his first stage, came home strongly with a second stage 50.02 possible to take out the Cock of the Walk. Gordon Shepherd fell foul of the breeze in both stages, missing either side of the bulls' eye, for third on the day with a pair of 48's, which included 7 centre bulls' eyes. Dennis Lavelles' A-grade debut started slowly with a 47.01 and his second stage 48.05 was book ended with inner fours despite a run of 5 consecutive centre bulls' eyes.

Bathurst Rifle Club 4th July The C R Kelly 800 yards Saturdays’ 800-yard range of the C R Kelly cup was a cold and dark affair with the afternoon drizzle and gusty westerly wind adding to shooters misery. The weather, however, could not dampen the performances of Dennis Lavelle and Gordon Shepherd. Lavelle has finally achieved his ambition of reaching club A-grade status. Since commencing full bore shooting in 2002, Lavelle has gone close to reaching the progressive handicap of less than two points needed to qualify for A grade and he achieved that feat on the weekend with a fine shoot of 98.07 topped of with a second stage possible 50.03. Lavelles’ last two months have been sensational. Gordon Shepherd also had a day out with a score of 99.05, topping the charts, his second consecutive 99 posing the possibility that a midseason travel break is good for steadying the hand and sharpening the eye.

Bathurst Rifle Club 27th June 2009 The C R Kelly 700 yards The C R Kelly Cup commenced on a dull, but still day, and most shooters took advantage of the quiet conditions. Steve Williams and Dennis Lavelle continued their barnstorming runs taking out the A and B grade Cocks of the Walk, to draw level on the same number of wins with Graeme Bright and Jan Sibera for the yearly COW trophies. All four shooters are on 11 wins a piece with just a handful of shoots left in the current season. Lavelle led Williams with a 50.04 to 50.03 first stage and the wandering Gordon Shepherd (returning from a short break), and Graeme Bright followed with 49.04 and 49.03. Ron Gibson was a late starter but held up with 47.03 whilst the trio of Tim Robinson, Keith Redding and John Coghill all shot 46.02’s. Jan Sibera was left wondering after a shock 41.02

Bathurst Rifle Club 20th June The F A Wilde Trophy 600 yards The final round of the F A Wilde Trophy was completed on Saturday and the winner evoked little surprise as Dennis Lavelle continued his hot streak with the rifle. His unorthodox methods of hand reaming his front sight rings to suit his eyesight seems to work a treat, much to the astonishment of his more experienced shooting companions. A light northeasterly breeze floating over the left shoulder and flicking up the range on occasion kept shooters on their toes, robbing both Graeme Bright and Jan Sibera of maximum points. Bright with 49.05, and Sibera, 49.03 were the early leaders from a group including John Coghill 47.03, Ron Gibson, and Lavelle, neither of the latter pair able to snag a single centre bulls eye in their 47.0’s.
