Bathurst Rifle Club OPM 2024

Bathurst Rifle Club recently held their 2024 Open Prize Meeting catering for shooters in all classes including Target Rifle A & B grade, F Class Standard A & B grade, F Open, FTR and Sporter classes which attracted a total field of fifty shooters providing good support for all classes with competitors from all directions near and far throughout NSW. The club now has five electronic target systems which handled the shooter numbers without issue. The three-stage program started mid-morning before the weather decided what to do for the day allowing most shooters a relatively easier start from the 500 yards mound. A couple of hours later shooting moved back to 600 yards for stage two on the day by which time the conditions had settled in to a variable and difficult pattern. After downing some lunch when you had a break, shooting then rolled into the fifteen-shot stage three finish for the day at 600 yards with little change to the difficult conditions often experienced at Bathurst range.

At the completion of the 500 yards stage Lyndhurst Target Rifle shooter Jim Jeffery was in the lead with a near perfect score of 50.9 just ahead of Bathurst shooter Les Fraser and fellow Lyndhurst shooter Brett McCauley. Target Rifle B Grade saw Skye Russell from Hornsby Club in the lead with a respectable 50.4 one point ahead of fellow club member Bill Ballantyne. F Standard A grade saw Bathurst shooter Col Howell in the lead with a 59.5 over Graham Crowe of Explorers Club on a countback with F Standard B grade shooter Ross Webb from Roseville Club scoring 58.5 ahead of Peter More of Katoomba Club one point behind. Kris Wilson of Hornsby Club topped the F Open shooters with a 60.8 over John Weigel of Gosford Club on countback with Bill Chandler of Cobar Club on 60.3 leading FTR class ahead of Aron Horder from Narromine-Dubbo. Sporter Class saw David Waters of Katoomba Club score 50.9 just one super centre ahead of Bathurst shooter James Clarke.

The first 600 yard stage saw Jim Jeffery keep up the pressure with another great 50.8 finishing one point ahead of Brett McCauley in TRA, with Bill Ballantyne taking the range ahead of Robert Logue of Katoomba club in TRB. FSA shooter Terry Howell of North Sydney Club claimed the stage with a 59.2 three points ahead of Bruce Rowlans of Lyndhurst Club. Lyndhurst FO shooter Blake Savage claimed top spot for the stage with a 60.4 ahead of Kris Wilson 59.5. FTR shooter Geoff Willis of Bathurst topped the stage with a 59.4 with Bill Chandler next with a 58.0. Local Sporter shooter James Clarke won his class with a 50.5 on countback over Aubrey Sonnenberg of Concord Club.

The final 600 yards range showed no easing of the tricky conditions with Brett McCauley shooting consistently to take the stage with 74.4 ahead of Les Fraser 73.9 in TRA. A brilliant finish by TRB shooter Skye Russell scoring a 74.8 ahead of Robert Logue 71.5. FSA shooter Terry Knight of Grenfell claimed the range with 86.9 ahead of Bruce Rowlands 86.2. Steve King of Fashions Mount got the top spot in FSB with a 78.4 ahead of Bathurst shooter Jeff Hill 75.3. FO shooter Garry Trudgett of Cootamundra Club had a great shoot with a score of 89.4 to win the range ahead of Michael Difford of Gosford Club with 85.6. Bill Chandler again claimed the range win in FTR scoring 87.5 ahead of Aron Horder with 86.6. James Clarke also claimed another range win in Sporter class with a 74.9 just ahead of Aubrey Sonnenberg with a 74.8.

Consistency and/or a great finish is always a key element to finishing at the top with results in all classes showing some of that form.
Results:
TRA- 1. Brett McCauley 173.16, 2. Jim Jeffery 172.22.
TRB- 1. Skye Russell 169.13, 2. Bill Ballantyne 167.13.
FSA- 1. Bruce Rowlands 201.9, 2. Terry Knight 200.16.
FSB- 1. Peter Moore 184.6, 2. Jeff Hill 182.7.
FO- 1. Blake Savage 205.14, 2. Garry Trudgett 205.10.
FTR- 1. Bill Chandler 205.8, 2. Geoff Willis 202.12.
SPO- 1. James Clarke 174.22, 2. Aubrey Sonnenberg 174.16.

Bathurst Rifle Club thanks all the competitors that came along for what was perhaps the best attended and managed OPM in recent years at our range while thanking all the club members who put in the big effort to prepare the range and equipment for the day and keep the event running as smoothly as possible on the day. We would also like to thank our sponsors including our club members who donated funds and equipment, Bathurst RSL for their continuing support and the local branch of the SSAA for their generous donation which is very much appreciated as we look forward to a closer relationship.

Saturday 2nd November was shot at 700 yards for the First round of Series 2 for the 2024-2025 season, today was a surprisingly difficult day for shooting, with very little breeze to be observed with small changes in direction was a false sense of security once vision was achieved down range through glass showed fast and thick moving mirage with sudden changes from left to right and back, Scope shooters found getting a clear sight picture almost impossible at the larger magnification settings. For the first time this year today saw no shooters score to their handicaps.
Target Rifle was topped this week Steve Williams fairing the best in the tricky conditions after dropping 3 in the first stage a a great second only dropping 1, Les Fraser came in second another few shots behind.
Sporter was won by James Clarke without a possible to be scored, dropping 2 in the first 3 in the second, Dennis in second after having to retire in the second stage with scope issues.
F Standard shooters really struggled in the conditions today with none of the shooters scoring over 100 for the day, Tristian Hughes was the closest winning the day with a 99 and Jeff Hill in second with a 96.
F Class shooters Geoff Willis and Mal Wright fought it out in the first stage only separated by only a point, the second stage is where Geoff somehow found a lucky horse shoe and the elements allowed him to almost score a possible only dropping one point to take the win.

Target Rifle was topped this week Les Fraser with Gordon Shepherd in second by only a V bull.
Sporter was won by John Loyd with Ben Hawkey in second.
F Standard was topped by Dave Butler with a consistent pair of 58’s with Col Howell in second.
F Class only had the one shooter this week and that was Mal Wright.

The Club had 4 shooters representing across 4 disciplines at the Canberra Kings, Steve Williams in Target Rifle, Geoff Willis in F Open, Jeff Eppleston in FTR and James Clarke in Sporter. The ranges where not the easiest with gusting winds and quick changes in directions seeing more shots dropped then would have liked. On the final day 2 shooters were in contention to win the Kings if they went clean on the last 2 stages, unfortunately they both dropped shots handing the wins away.
Geoff Willis came second in F Open by only 2 Super Centres.
Jeff Eppleston came third in FTR.
James Clarke came second in Sporter.

Cancelled Due To Weather
Saturday 14th December was shot at 500 yards for the Second Round of Series 2 for the 2024-2025 season, after last week’s rain cancellation and mountain shutdowns saw most shooters returning to the range after a few weeks off. It was a tricky day on the range with patchy cloud cover and a continuously shifting wind saw all but one shooter miss scoring to their handicaps.
Target Rifle was a close one this week with Graeme Bright taking the win over Les Fraser by only a point, not a bad effort by Les who was shooting a new combination for the day.
Sporter only saw 2 shooters today with James Clarke returning to his normal form, after a shaky first stage came back with a perfect score in the second, Dennis Lavelle unfortunately stared great but a scope malfunction meant he had to retire.
F Standard was topped by Col Howell this week who managed to fair best in the tricky conditions beating Jeff Eppleston by one point.
F Class was topped by Geoff Willis this week only dropping 5 points despite trialling some new primers, second was Mal Wright a few more points back.
