Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 10th March 2018, W Cutler Cup, 300yards Another warm mild Saturday with the conditions for target shooting seemingly excellent but it was not as they first appeared. A light easterly breeze filtering through the stand of trees on the left of the range and the bright sun set the range up for another day of mirages. Colin Howell who is becoming a short range specialist started with a bang laying on a 60.2 possible. Jeff Eppleston looked to be on song to also go clear until a gust of wind put a magpie three on his score card. No one else threatened the possible as the left breeze turned into a forward fishtail keeping scores well in check.

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 3rd March 2018, J Wilde Memorial, and K Redding Trophies, 900yards The light breeze from the north west was the least of shooters worries as the burning sunshine set up perfect conditions for the formation of a heavy mirage. Practically the whole afternoon was influenced by the swirling mass of boiling air in front of the target and the fishtail breeze caused the mirage to change direction constantly. The 900 yard range, the longest on the Bathurst Rifle Range, is never easy and even the best were fooled by the shimmering air in front of the target face. Nick Cock and Geoff Willis did best, dropping just two points each in a first stage which proved at times unreadable. Cock appeared in control until he shot a double inner late in his shoot for a 48.05. On the other hand Willis started with a wobble before tightening up for a 58.2.

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 24th February 2018, J Wilde Memorial, and K Redding Trophies, 800yards A fine mild day greeted shooters at the 800 yard mound for the J Wilde Memorial and K Redding 8/900 yard trophy competition on Saturday. On a day one would expect a number of clean score sheets only one possible was shot, that a 50.05 by Steve Williams early in the shoot. Nick Cock with a high centre count 49.06 and Graeme Bright 49.03 both had mid stage inner fours whilst Gordon Shepherd fell for the two target trick with a shot on the wrong target. The second stage was a very tight affair with Cock uncharacteristically dropping his last shot to add to an earlier inner four giving the running to Williams and Bright. Williams fell to a double inner four and Bright succumbed with a mid stage inner but both a point ahead of Cock. With the two shooters finishing on 98.08 the A grade honours boiled down to a final stage count back between Williams and Bright, the latter taking the day by way of a higher second stage score.

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 17th February 2018, J Wilde Memorial Trophy, Championship & QVM, 700yards The promised northeasterly breeze produced one of the more difficult days of shooting as the mirage boiled, flicked from side to side, and was generally unreadable. Nick Cock pulled out the first marble and proceeded to give everyone a lesson in how to read mirage. Cocks’ 50.06 was a masterpiece and the only possible of the day as the shimmering targets became a blur and shooters almost had to guess which ghost was the real target. Steve Williams fresh from his triumph in New Zealand got his only inner four amongst a string of centre bull’s eyes as the mirage intensified. Ron Gibson had an excellent first stage of 47.03 followed by Graeme Bright 46.03 and Gordon Shepherd who finished on four inner fours, for 45.03. John Coghill encountered ammunition problems and had to settle for a 39.01 which included an outer two.

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 10th February 2018, R L Gilmour Esq. Cup, 600yards International Competition in New Zealand Bathurst Rifle Clubs’ International representatives have again done the club proud with both individual and teams success in New Zealand. Just prior to the commencement of the New Zealand National Championships (Queens Prize Meeting) in Wellington, Steve Williams entered the Wellington District Rifle Association open prize meeting against very stiff competition from throughout Australasia, the USA, Great Britain, Canada and Japan. With strong winds (which Wellington is renowned for) and occasional rain periods some matches had to be shortened to 7 shot matches over 300, 600, 800, and 1000 yards. Williams returned to his glory days being the only competitor in the 160 strong field to go through all 6 matches without dropping a point in winning this very prestigious event. Whilst also preparing for the National Championship Geoff Willis took out the FTR division of the “Wellington”.
