Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 27th August 2016 W & J Brown Shield 900 yards The rescheduled 900 yard last range of the W & J Brown Shield was held on Saturday in very pleasant weather conditions; bright sun, little wind but a strong mirage to upset the equilibrium. Early conditions were quite readable, but as the day wore on gremlins got into the system and scores plummeted. At the start of the second stage conditions suddenly turned upside down with quick wind strength and directional variations resulting in some very unusual results from the very best in the club.

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 20th August 2016 The 900 yard range of the W & J Brown shield was postponed due to very strong winds threatening to snap the target legs and endangering the markers. A practice shoot was organized over 600 yards with smaller targets but the weather almost halted that shoot before it began. A swirling shower of sleet and rain swept Grahame Willis off the mound after just four shots and, wet and bedraggled, he retired for the day. Others, recently returned from the warm climes of Queensland where they contested the QRA Queens Prize series, either stayed at home or fronted, but chose not subject their bodies and equipment to the savages of the weather.

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 6th August 2016 W & J Brown Shield, 800yards It’s the Queensland Rifle Association Queens Prize time again and the top Bathurst Rifle Club shooters have decamped and headed off to contest Club and District Rifle Association competitions and the Queens Prize this week. They left a shivering group of stay at home’s to contest the second round of the W & J Brown Shield at 800 yards. Early on in the shoot a gentle zephyr of a breeze wafted in from the north north-west barely moving the directional flags. It was a prime opportunity to take a bite out of the range that has bitten shooters so hard in recent weeks.

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 30th July 2016 W & J Brown Shield, 700yards One would be forgiven for believing there were two separate events being held on the Bathurst Rifle Range on Saturday afternoon, each with entirely different weather conditions. Such was the disparity between Nick Cock and the rest of the competitors even some unseen lull in conditions could not explain the dominance Cock held over the rest of the field. With little breeze, a slight mirage and bright sunny skies conditions were ripe for the picking. But it was the conditions that did the picking as competitor after competitor threw inner fours, magpies threes and outer twos at the target. To compound matters there was even a hit on the wrong target.

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 23rd July 2016 J Sibera Trophy, 600yards Shooters approached Saturdays’ 600 yard J Sibera Trophy shoot with some trepidation based on Friday night’s evil weather. The strong winds continued for most of Saturday afternoon and resulted in below average scores as the wind gusts caused the directional flags to dance wildly on the flag poles. Nobody had mastery over the conditions until the final two shooters of the day experienced a slight lull in the wind. Some even shot in rain squalls as drenching drizzle swept across the range on several occasions. The sun ducked in and out of the clouds making changes in light conditions a further challenge.
