Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 17th June 2017, Practice 600yards Saturdays final round of the F A Wilde Memorial Trophy and first 600 yard round of the Club Championship was abandoned and replaced with a demonstration and practice on the Silver Mountain Electronic Target system. On a perfect shooting day the system, one of several the Club is evaluating, performed well and gave club members a firsthand look at the advantages to be gained by installing an electronic system. From a safety point of view, the physical nature of working a manual target is reduced markedly, and the fact that no person is in front of the firing line also reduces the chances of accidental injury. From the shooters perspective the information displayed on the screens, both during and after the shoot, is invaluable for the development of accuracy and performance.

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 10th June 2017, F A Wilde Trophy, 500yards The late autumn, early winter weeks have been generally kind to shooters after a fairly brutal period prior to that. The weather has been calm with just a minimum of breeze and mirage and Saturday was no exception as the gentle east to north easterly breeze filtered through the trees along Barry Gurdon Drive. There were a number of possibles and near possibles with Nick Cock again dominating the mound. Cock, who last week shot 100.14 at 300 yards, proceeded to destroy the target centre with another 100, this time with 11 centres. Graeme Bright and Dennis Lavelle just missed double possibles, Bright dropping an early shot for a first stage 49.03 but then fired an excellent 50.06 second stage. Lavelle had a little wobble in each stage but regrouped immediately to shoot a pair of 49’s with 7 centre bull’s eyes.

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 3rd June 2017 F A Wilde Trophy, 300yards It was a beautiful day for the first shoot of winter with light cloud cover on an otherwise bright sunny day. The conditions were almost perfect for shooting with just a whisper of breeze, but vigilance was required as the breeze and mirage swapped sides regularly. It was the performance of Nick Cock whose double possible 100.14 set the day up for some serious scores, but despite a 60.7 second stage possible from F class Champion Grahame Willis and a cameo from Mark Worrad (60.6), better known for his bench rest skills, there were few performances of note.

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 27th May 2017, Secretary's Trophy, 900yards The 2017 Championship which was run over the full year format for the first time did not produce higher totals even though there were an increased number of shoots available for qualification. Weather conditions early in the Championship saw many scores discarded as non competitive. Nick Cock, in his first full year since transferring from the Lithgow Small Arms Rifle Club in mid 2016, had a comfortable win over former champions Steve Williams and Graeme Bright who filled the minor placings. Cock scored 783.68/800, Williams 774.68 and Bright 772.54. The F-class Championship was won by Grahame Willis for the third consecutive year with the winning total of 912.46/960, well below Jeff Epplestons' record 932.70 total in 2013. The B grade Championship went to Dennis Lavelle for the third year in succession over a disappointing John Coghill. The scores, 728.39 to 719.30 were well below those of past years.

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 20th May 2017, Secretary's Trophy, 800yards Saturdays unseasonable weather was more than a match for shooters who fell for the fickle breeze, intermittent mirage and masking cloud cover. As in recent weeks the benign looking conditions hid some quirks that were not immediately apparent and scores, particularly in the first stage, were held in check. Steve Williams was the exception, with a high centre count possible setting the challenge for the day. Nick cock responded but dropped a point mid-stage whilst Graeme Bright after an early inner four dropped the batten with a double inner finish. Williams lost a point in the second stage to present Cock with a chance but despite shooting a 50.04 possible the task was beyond him due to Williams’ twelve centre bull’s eyes. Bright also shot a 50.05 possible but his first stage 47.04 sealed his fate.
