Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 8th November 2014 the Diggers and George James Cups 500yards Last weeks' wind was a thing of the past as Saturday dawned fine, sunny and calm. The conditions were a little deceptive however as the light north westerly breeze was accompanied by a mirage which variously worked in conjunction with, and against the breeze. At one stage the top two directional flags were pointing in opposing directions whilst the mirage flip-flopped either side of the target. Geoff Willis gave a pointer to what could be achieved as he opened the shoot with a 59.4 dropping just the one point on his first counting shot. Grahame Willis was unable to match that score but hung in with a 57.2 However the target rifle competitors were unable to follow their example as the fluky conditions held sway, and dropped shots and low centre counts were the norm for the first stage.

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 1st November 2014 the Diggers and George James Cups 300yards Two of the oldest trophies contested annually in Bathurst Rifle Club competition, are on the line over the next six weeks. The Diggers Cup, an off-rifle event first presented in 1933, and the George James Cup, a handicap event first presented in the 1947-48 season will proceed over two rounds each at 300, 500, and 600 yards, the best score at each of the three ranges being totaled to determine the winner. It is fortunate that the worst score at each range can be eliminated as conditions on Saturday were nothing short of impossible with a strong gusty north wind alternating between directly up-range to square right wind. The ferocious breeze did not let up until the very end of the day and it was virtuously impossible to hold the rifle steady with the fierce buffeting experienced by all shooters on the mound.

2014 Annual Open Prize Meeting

Posted in Weekly Roundup on Oct 29, 2014

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 2014 Annual Open Prize Meeting - Sponsored by Bathurst RSL Club A mid-summer like day with the temperature rising into the low thirties enticed 51 shooters from thirteen rifle clubs across the State to attend the Bathurst Rifle Club Annual Open Competition on Sunday 26th October, and there was an even spread of numbers across all six grades and classes. The morning mirage gave way to a gusty westerly breeze, which constantly and rapidly changed direction in a 90 degree arc from southwest to northwest. Although the conditions were quite pleasant for spectators shooters found them difficult, with all bar one of the six possibles shot in the calmer period of the 500 yard range, and all of those achieved by F class shooters. The sixth possible was scored by Les Fraser (Lithgow SARC) who stamped his authority with a final stage 50.07 after going into the last range with a comfortable lead. Fraser won two stages and was second in the other taking out the A grade Target Rifle Aggregate by three shots in a dominant display.

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 6 September 2014 W & J Brown Shield, 8/900yards Again the weather was kind to shooters with a south westerly breeze accompanied by a moderate mirage wafting through the trees on the left of the range. The breeze however varied in strength and the mirage tended to follow in its wake. Whilst the conditions were not severe there was enough variation to add to the difficulty posed by the long 800 and 900 yard ranges. Geoff Willis, unable to stay for the full afternoon, shot 2 stages at 800 yards and carried on from his recent prize winning performances in regional and interstate competitions with a 60.4 and a 59.4 to set the standard for the day. Willis was however, ineligible for the trophy. Graeme Bright took up that challenge shooting a low centre bullseye possible but from there, performances trended down with Steve Williams securing a 6 centre bullseye stage but dropping one point for 49.06. Dennis Lavelle and John Coghill shot 47.03 apiece whilst Gordon Shepherd and Ron Gibson were each a point further back.

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc 30 August 2014 W & J Brown Shield, 6/700yards The run of mild weather continued with the conditions predominantly from the south east with Mount Panorama shielding the range from the excess breeze. The lazy mirage did not add much to the difficulty but the subtle changes in the direction of the breeze was sufficient to hold scores in check. Steve Williams returned to local competition after a less than successful trip to the QRA Queens prize meeting in Brisbane but he left his bad form and bad luck in Queensland to outshine the rest of the field over the twin distances of 600 and 700 yards. Whilst unable to go clear on either range he dropped just one point in each stage to snatch the Cock of the Walk from the front running Gordon Shepherd with a total of 98.05. Shepherd started well and finished the six hundred range with a flourish completing the possible with an impressive seven centre bulls eyes. Graeme Bright however had a less than successful 600, dropping three points for a 47.02.
