Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 1st April 2017 Captains Trophy, 800yards It was a bright sunny day with a mild breeze wafting in from the south-south west, turning to a forward fishtail later in the day. There was enough devil in the breeze to keep shooters expectations in check as one by one they were denied the thrill of a possible. Dennis Lavelle made the early going look easy as he appeared to be shooting down a pipe such was his tight group. Gordon Shepherd found the going difficult but hung tough to record a 49.03 just one centre bull's eye behind Lavelle. John Coghill appeared to be doing it relatively easy until he chased the breeze and ended with a double inner finish for 47.02. Jim Jeffrey visiting from Lyndhurst Rifle Club to sight in a new step ladder front sight shot a 48.02 and then promptly retired.

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 25 March 2017, K Redding 700 Trophy, 700yards. Dark foreboding skies greeted shooters on Saturday for the K Redding 700 yard Trophy. Although threatening to bucket down all day, only the odd misty scud fell on shooters backs. The light was fairly even though very dark and the first stage was shot in very calm conditions with little wind and zero mirage. A few gusts started to appear and the wind built up to a strong westerly as the day wore on. There was enough movement and variation to keep all scores in check.

Weekly Review 18/03/2017

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 18 March 2017, W Cutler Cup, 600yards We have had easterly winds over much of the past 4 weeks and each has been different in its effect on the shooting conditions. Saturdays easterly moved in an arc from almost full southerly to full northerly but the strength remained relatively steady meaning the angle of the breeze determined the degree of deflection of the projectile. Nick Cock was again the standout shooting 99.09 to easily win the Cock of the Walk. Graeme Bright tried hard but was one point shy of Cock in both stages whilst Steve Williams, whilst amassing 10 centre bull's eyes couldn't hold tight in the bull's eye ring. John Coghill had an excellent day finally breaking free of the mire he has been in, in recent months. Shepherd seemed to catch the Coghill disease as an elbow injury caused a 2nd stage meltdown. Dennis Lavelle only had one stage (not good) after switching back to his 7.62mm caliber rifle, before heading off to the Katoomba Rifle Club presentation.

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 11 March 2017, W Cutler Cup, 500yards A southerly wind threw up several dilemmas for shooters, as the Mount and surrounding hills and ridges split the breeze into several different components. As a result the flags responded by indicating that the wind direction was from every forward quarter. At times quite strong from the south west, and other times a mild south easterly with plenty of mirage, the changes kept shooters on their toes and caught out a number of the lesser lights unfamiliar with the prevailing conditions. No-one achieved a possible even when the conditions lightened later in the day but some very good scores were attained. Steve Williams set the top standard with a first stage 49.06. Gordon Shepherd with 48.04 and Graeme Bright with 48.03 were next best but John Coghill was quite erratic with a low point 42.02.

Bathurst Rifle Club Inc. 4th March 2017, W Cutler Cup, 300yards The weather played right into the hands of shooters as individual milestones were reached and record scores were attained. Handicaps which have blown out in recent weeks came in handy as 80% of shooters shot up to or better than their handicaps indicated. Two F-class novices matched or bettered their more credentialed opponents with Ben Wright shooting his first possible, attaining his highest score (118.7/120) and winning the F-class Cock of the Walk. Colin Howell, who has been shooting competitively for less than six months, also shot his first possible and in doing so shot the days' best F-class stage, a 60.5.
